California ACTRA Secretary

Between ACTRA arenas, the Chapter Finals and two National Finals Qualifiers, the California ACTRA Chapter had more teams entered up than ever during a single month. Arena operators also had some great ropings over Labor Day with lots of members getting in their last qualifiers for the Chapter Finals. California had over 1,100 members qualify for the Chapter Finals in Chowchilla and National Qualifiers in Acton and Corning.

The first qualifier was at Darin Readmond’s Vincent Hill Arena and it was a great one day roping with some awesome awards. The following week, the Chapter Finals in Chowchilla kicked off on Thursday, Sept. 21st. There were over 2,000 teams making the Finals a huge success. Over $240,000 in cash and awards were handed out. The largest roping of the week was the #5.5. Congratulations to the team of Lane Wheeler and Will Cowden who pocketed $6,940 plus beautiful Cactus trophy saddles. Check out all the winners and payoffs in this article.

Friday night was the Catastrophe Banquet, silent auction, live auction and year-end awards program. Larry McGrady and his staff of helpers did a great job with the year-end program. The Catastrophe Fund auction did very well raising over $5,800. A special thanks goes to Teena Blair, Ellen St. Clair and Vikki Sweeney as well as all the donors and buyers. Thanks to Don Brumley for handling the auctioneering duties and playing a big part in its success. Once again, the crew from the Farmers Den in Turlock put together a great dinner.

A big thank you to all those who made this Chapter Finals possibly the best ever. Including our office staff of Toni Machado, Cory, Tonja Sweeney and announcers Cyndy Mitchell and Brenda Robbins, what a smooth operation. A tip of the Resistol to Billy Butler and Lee Legasey for their professional flagging jobs. Great job cowboys. Also want to thank Lee for his timing equipment, Perfect Timing.

One of the main ingredients to a successful roping is the cattle. Steve Simons of SBarJ Cattle did a great job with his cattle, not only the ones he brought, but keeping them sorted and always a great high team set of steers. A big thank you to Richard Santos who has one of the most pressure filled jobs, the Dummy Roping. Could not do it without Tom Pinter from Off The Beaten Path for all his great work with the camera and we thank him.

Some of the most forgotten, unless there is a problem are the Directors. Bob Blair and his cast of characters lead the charge of getting things setup and running. This takes countless hours to set up and be ready for the Chapter Finals. President Bill Horner took care of all the big decisions and a number of Directors pitched in to help things run smoothly. Where would we be without Jody Branco? What a great job taking care of the stalls and RV’s. Jody has heard every conceivable story and problem and takes care of business with the confidence necessary to do a great job, thanks Jody!

A heartfelt thanks to the Chowchilla community for making us feel welcome and at home. The last ingredient to this successful event and certainly not the least important are the members. Without their loyalty to the Arena Operators and to ACTRA, none of this would be possible.

Hopefully I have covered everyone that contributed to a very successful 35th Anniversary Roping.  Hope to see you in Reno, travel safe.
