Classic Barrel Racing

CERES, CA – What better way to kick off the new year than with a barrel race! More than 150 contestants competed at Diamond Bar Arena Dec. 30-31 at a barrel race by Classic Barrel Racing. The Open race had $1,000 added daily, thanks to Diamond Bar Arena and Classic Barrel Racing.

Saturday morning started with exhibition/time only runs and the fog was heavy…at one point you couldn’t see the barrels in the arena. When it was time for the open race the fog cleared and Shane Parson and his crew had the ground in tip top shape.

Saturday’s race had 138 Open contestants, the fast time of the day was Pam Scheer on Lucky Fame, who ran a 17.473 to win a check for $509. We met up with Pam to discuss her runs. She said on Saturday, Lucky Fame, who she calls Patrick, took the lead with or without her…he was on fire and she felt like a flea on his back. They placed 5th on Sunday, Pam said he is a great average horse. She calls him Patrick because he was born on St. Patrick’s Day. Pam mentioned that Patrick has tons of quirks, which makes him fun. She has owned him for two years, prior to that she leased him in 2012 and was heartbroken when she lost the lease. It was 4 years until she got him back. Her husband, Bryan, started him as a 2 year old so they have been acquainted for a long time. When asked who she would love to travel with, Pam said, “my husband, Bryan, he is my best friend.”

Sunday the sun was shining, and the contestants were out in full force. There were 111 in the open, the fast time for Sunday was set by Samantha Dewhurst riding Herbie Rides Again, they ran a 17.599 winning $475. We asked Samantha about her run and she said it started off by her tipping the first barrel but it stayed up, she said things went well after that. She admitted she was shocked when they announced her time. Her horse’s nickname is Marlo and sometimes she calls her “the princess” and she loves cookies. Both Samantha and her horse were born in 2005, her horse was trained by her mom, Shella Dewhurst. When asked if Samantha could travel the road with anyone, the answer was Charmayne James. Samantha attended a clinic of hers and learned a lot. Samantha’s greatest accomplishment so far is winning this race in Ceres, and her future plans are to attend some CCPRA rodeos, the Sherry Cervi Youth Championships as well as many Classic Barrel Racing events. Samantha decided to donate some of the money she won to a Cat Rescue in Santa Rosa that is focused on finding the fire victims’ cats in that area.

The average was tough, with just hundredths of a second separating the placings. First through third in the average were awarded awesome Classic Equine boots, thanks to Diamond Bar Arena and Classic Barrel Racing.

We have a full schedule of races ahead for the year in Lincoln, Woodland and Ceres, be sure to check out ClassicBarrelRacing.com for the schedule.
