CHSRA District 3 President

Hey, rodeo fans!

LINCOLN, CA – February 10-11 we held our rodeo at the Triple Crown Equestran Center instead of the D3 outdoor arena that we usually rodeo in. A huge thank you to the Miller family for the use of their beautiful indoor facility while our arena was flooded.

Junior Goat Tying Record Broken

LINCOLN, CA – At the CHSRA District 3 rodeo held in Lincoln Nov. 13, Dean Sherbo, a seventh grader at Oak View Elementary School in Acampo, broke the CHSRA D3 Junior Goat Tying record with a blistering run of 9.93 seconds. Dean started rodeoing last year. He started roping with local friends and then went to the NCJRA rodeos over the summer.

Rodeoing in D3 is very special to him because several family members grew up rodeoing in the same district. Dean competes in ribbon roping, breakaway roping, team roping (heeler), goat tying and chute dogging.

Dean said, “I was really concentrating at stepping off the horse fast, in the right spot, and just kept saying if I can stick the landing I could be fast.”

An interesting backstory to Dean’s record breaking run was that he was riding a borrowed horse. Diesel, a 19-year-old gelding, is owned by Hailey Wilbur, an 11th grader who attends Lodi High School. This great horse has taken Hailey to State and Challenge in goat tying.

Regarding Dean and Diesel’s winning partnership, Hailey explained “Dean’s mom, Jenny, asked if I would come help him and a few girls with their goat tying. Dean is known for getting off his horse like a spider monkey. I told him to try to keep his leg coming across the horse straighter and to put his shoulders back and look up as he’s getting off. The most important thing is to make sure your feet are moving once you hit the ground or you will do a face-plant. Dean’s horse was giving him some trouble in practice, so I told him to get on Diesel. I knew he would take great care of Dean. After just one get off, I knew they’d be perfect together. I offered for Dean to use Diesel at the rodeo that weekend and both days they worked as a team. At the Sunday perf, Diesel put him in the correct spot and Dean had a perfect dismount and quick hands, he set the arena record!”
