Draw..........3 for $25 – ANNUAL DON JONES MEMORIAL ROPING – Doug Pharr Victorious At M.M. Fisher Jr. Memorial Steer Roping Courtesy ProRodeo.Com Doug Pharr is no stranger to success as a rodeo competitor. The Mt. Calm, Texas, resident qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2000, 2005, 2006 and 2008, as a tie-down roper, placing in 12 rounds and finishing among the PRCA’s best in the event. But even Pharr struggled to comprehend what transpired at the M.M. Fisher, Jr. Memorial Steer Roping in Andrews, Texas March 9-10. “It was unexpected for me to win this roping,” Pharr said with a laugh. “It’s one of the biggest steer ropings of the year and certainly the prestige and the caliber of everyone there, it was very exciting for me to win this roping. I’m still in disbelief.” During his runs at the event, Pharr kept a steady pace, catching all four steers he ran at. While his time of 11.8 seconds in the second round was the only effort that cracked the top eight to earn him round money, his aggregate time of 54.5 seconds was good enough to secure the title, placing him one second ahead of John E. Bland. Coupled with his round money, Pharr earned $6,616 for the weekend. That total alone gives him the most money earned in a season since 2012, when he finished at just more than $7,100. Pharr stepped away from being a full-time PRCA competitor around 2009 to focus on work outside of rodeo and his family. He dabbled in tie-down roping events on occasion just to stay connected or an excuse to get out of town for a few days. After years of chasing and tying calves, Pharr decided to shift his focus and try something new, opting to step into the world of steer roping on a limited basis. He averages about one competition a month, mainly in Texas, while training at home. Being competitive has always been the desire for Pharr. While he trained his own horse, Pharr has been fortunate to use Jamie Long’s horse, Tongue, over the last year as his personal mount recovers from an injury. While it’s certainly been fun to compete, Pharr has been waiting a long time for everything to come together. And, after a lot of hard work, he’s grateful – and a little shocked – that it finally happened. “I’ve probably been here maybe four times. I haven’t ever done very good at this roping – and I haven’t really won a ton,” Pharr said. “I’ve probably been steer roping now for four or five years at this level. I’ve had some very limited success in my view and then suddenly it all came together at a really good roping like this. I’m at a loss for words.” Average: 1. Doug Pharr, 54.5 seconds on four head, $5,967; 2. John E. Bland, 55.5, $5,189; 3. Blake Deckard, 56.5, $4,410; 4. Thomas Smith, 61.2, $3,632; 5. Zac Parrington, 62.1, $2,854; 6. Tanner Duwe, 62.6, $2,076; 7. Keith Hudson, 70.4, $1,297; 8. Trent Sorey, 37.5 on three head, $519.
