Well… it’s that time of year. Hali is getting ready for the Breakaway National Finals. The other day she was unloading one of her horses when he stepped on her right foot, breaking a bone.

Now that both of my kids are rodeoing, I’ve started blocking off 10 days a month so I can go with them. Lately I’ve been asked about being a helper when I was riding Hali’s horse at the rodeo or feeding for Gabe at the All-Star Finals. For all the years of competing at a high level, to now being the one helping behind the scenes, it’s a very different experience.

This year Hali had an unbelievable winter of rodeos placing at Fort Worth, San Antonio, and winning Houston. It was her first time of roping in the buildings, and I’ve been very proud of her.

After watching the Texas Junior High and High School Rodeo finals this week, what a great opportunity for kids to compete against other kids and learn about the sport of rodeo. My kids have come up the ranks in both divisions and that experience is invaluable. There are many opportunities in rodeo now for these kids, especially the girls because of the popularity of Breakaway and how much it’s growing, with no real end in sight.
