Ronald “Pop” Wardell Selby died peacefully in Sacramento on August 1, 2018 at 84 years old. Ron is survived by his loving, devoted wife Joyce “Nan” Selby of 65 amazing years; children Cheryl (Pat) Latimer; Rhonda (Larry) Botts; siblings Virgil (Mayetta) Selby; Charlotte (Richard) Johnson; Chuck (Lou) Selby; six grandchildren and their spouses; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Ron was born on January 18, 1934 in Merced, CA to Wyle “Bill” and Oma “Geraldine” Selby. He graduated from Escalon High in 1952 along with his high school sweetheart and future wife, Joyce Wilson. He proudly served his country in the USAF as an Air Policeman from 1953-1957 and as a reservist until 1961. He received the National Defense Service Medal. Ron and Joyce lived in several cities while working for Standard Oil and settled in Red Bluff in 1964 where he established Selby Petroleum, Inc. In the mid-70s they moved to Salinas, CA and further expanded their business until retiring in 2007.
Ron had many passions in life. He was an avid team roper which he continued into his 70’s. Ron was active in ACTRA (American Cowboy Team Roping Association) and served as a National Director and the California President from 2003-2004. Ron loved bowling and he and Joyce participated in multiple weekly leagues. Ron enjoyed traveling with his friends and family throughout the years. He and Joyce moved to Sacramento in early 2017 to be close to their family. Ron was very grateful for his active and amazing life and he will be dearly missed.
A celebration of life and reception was held August 18 at the Sacramento Horsemen’s Association. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Elementary, 2500 K Street, Sacramento, CA 95816 or to the CHP 11-99 Foundation, 2244 North State College Blvd. Fullerton, CA 92831.
ACTRA Says Goodbye To Ron Selby
ACTRA had to say goodbye to another California Chapter President. Ron Selby was the California President from 2003-2004. He brought his business experience and professionalism to the California Board during a time when it was much needed. It became obvious that he was someone who would be an asset to the National Board and spent several years as a National Director.
ACTRA has always been blessed with great leadership and Ron certainly was one of those leaders. Many thanks.
