The National Finals Rodeo is the best of the best. I usually watch it every night from home. I was fortunate this year to go to Las Vegas for a few days and enjoy one night live as well as some of the Cowboy Christmas. It was a fun atmosphere to be a part of, except I really missed the commentating of Joe Beaver. He seems to know every cowboy and every animal in the roping and steer wrestling timed events.

He is very precise on the times, and what someone needs to do to place or take over the average. His knowledge and humor combined tells you who is doing well and who is having a “rutrow” out there. He knows the horses and gives credit where credit is due to the great ones. He readily talks about practice habits and techniques for improving their skills, and acknowledges the cowboys who practice at his ranch.

This year I was impressed with Joe Beaver referring to Clay O’Brien Cooper as “The Champ.” Joe, a champ himself, shows a lot of respect for Clay by calling him “The Champ.” Clay is well deserving of this title because of the incredible and consistent run he has made over the years. Beyond the title “The Champ,” he also has a testimony. Everyone who knows him is aware of his moral integrity and commitment to his relationship with God.

I noticed Tuf Cooper with hat in hand giving thanks, being very careful in each interview to “give all glory and praise to God,” making his testimony clear. Lastly, I must draw your attention to Trevor Brazile. He has the title for sure. What a champion! He also has a testimony. His reputation, character and family speak loudly of his relationship with the Lord. I believe a personal testimony is greater than any title.

The Bible tells a story about a ruler named Herod. As the ruler of a large territory and nation, his title was “King of the Jews.” He was responsible for beheading a man named John the Baptist, who had a wonderful testimony as a spokesman for the coming Christ. Herod wielded his power in taking John’s life because of his title. Two thousand years later, I find that people are still naming their kids John and their dogs Herod. I believe some of you are naming your little boys Clay, Tuf, and Trevor because of the reputation and testimony that follow them.

Each of us may have a title like farmer, rancher, business man, cowgirl or cowboy. We also are creating a testimony every day through our lifestyle, work, roping etc. However, when this life is over and they throw dirt on you and go eat chicken, or whatever they eat –  it will be your testimony that will be talked about, not your title. Only you can create your testimony.

Rope great and enjoy this New Year. God bless you. Send your comments and prayer requests to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
