By Brody Gill Special To Ropers Sports News COTTONWOOD, CALIF. – There are few ceremonies that take place at the start of a sporting event that bring goosebumps to your skin: the national anthem at the Super Bowl, the opening tee shot at the Masters Tournament, or the call to post at the Kentucky Derby. Each of these opening ceremony traditions symbolize the legacy and honor that the event holds to its fans and athletes. The Broc Cresta Memorial Team Roping can be added to that prestigious list for rodeo cowboys and cowgirls. For the past 11 years, prior to starting the beloved open roping, Spencer Mitchell, NFR header and best friend of Broc Cresta, places his rope on the first steer and lets the steer trot down the arena as everyone takes a moment of silence. Everyone surrounding the arena remembers all that Broc meant to them as a brother, friend, and cowboy. This tradition has been done since the first Broc Cresta Memorial Team Roping where the passing of Broc was less than a year prior. Mourning and tears filled everyone’s eyes as that first steer trotted down the arena to symbolize Broc’s passing. Eleven years later, the emotions gathered have changed as the steer makes its way down the arena to celebrate Broc’s legacy and remember why we rope in his name the Tuesday before Red Bluff Round-Up. Anyone familiar with the Northern California weather in April knows that it can be 95 degrees or raining sideways. As the roping neared, the weather was changing by the day for what Tuesday, April ROPERS SPORTS NEWS MAY 2023 VOL. 55, NO. 4 $2.50 “The Original Team Roping Publication” Official Publication Of ACTRA Postage Pre-Paid TIME DATED MATERIAL – DO NOT DELAY Chad Masters & Trey Yates Take The Title At Broc Cresta Memorial 24060 N. Kirchner, 24, and Thompson, 25, roped six steers in 45.38 seconds to take center stage at the fabulous Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma at BFI’s end on April 1. After braving the BFI marathon, both were borderline speechless. “The BFI is the biggest roping there is,” said Kirchner, 24, who works alongside his dad, Robert, at Myrl Mortenson’s cattle operation about an hour and 15 minutes northwest of Guthrie in Ames, Oklahoma. “To just be able to compete in this roping is great. To even think about winning it is crazy. “Winning the BFI is everything. This is the first big roping I’ve ever placed at, let alone won. What’s funny is that I didn’t feel any pressure in the short round. I felt super calm, like just go out there and do my job and see what happens.” Kirchner and Thompson— who were awarded Coats Saddles, Gist Buckles, Resistol Hats and Hat Pacs, YETI Coolers, Best Ever Pads, Justin Boots, B&W Hitches, Equinety and BFI Wine on top of that cool $160,000— were the fourth callback behind the high team of Clint Summers and Cory Petska, Coleman Proctor and Logan Medlin, and Brandon Beers and Daniel Braman. Biggest Win by Far “This is absolutely my biggest win by far,” said Thompson, 25, who lives in tiny Munday, Texas about an hour north of Abilene. “The biggest one before this was winning the #11 Shootout heeling for Wesley Thorp at the 2012 USTRC Finals. Wesley headed for me at the high school rodeos, too.” Kirchner and Thompson were 6.66 on their last run to take their six-steer total over the 21-foot BFI scoreline to 45.38 seconds. James of Atoka, Okla., and Hughes of Sulphur, Okla., caught four steers in 29.44 seconds for the windfall on March 30. Then, in the Hooey Jr. BFI Open for higher-ranked ropers, it was Weatherford College standouts Jett Stewart and Cashton Weidenbener who took home $42,000 plus Cactus saddles, Resistol hats, Gist buckles, Hooey backpacks and Smarty dummies, among other prizes. The pair had left their Texas home at 2:30 a.m. to make it to Guthrie for the day’s ropings, then took off to Snyder, Texas for the next evening’s college rodeo. Weidenbener of Payson, Arizona, is the defending National High School Finals Rodeo heeling champion. It was only the second jackpot for the young horse ridden by Ione, Oregon’s Jett Stewart, who is the son of former NFR heeler Jason Stewart. The latter had called his father before that final steer for $42,000 and gotten this advice: “It’s not that hard. Just score, ride and rope.” The ropings paid out a record $334,000 in total cash, plus prizes, to ropers under 19. They kicked off Wrangler BFI Week, anchored by the 46th annual Bob Feist Invitational, and running through April 4. Full results from the Hooey Jr. BFI #10.5: First Rotation: 1. UTV NOW CARRYING THE THE ALL-ELECTRIC EXPEDITION VEHICLE FOR FARMERS, HUNTERS & THE BRAVE • Gas Model Also Available! E1000 As the fable goes, an old Indian chief had just become a Christian. After awhile he was approached by others and asked what it was like. The chief answered that it was like a fight between a black dog (representing the dark side of life) and a white dog (representing the good side of life) When asked which dogs wins, he replied “the one that you feed the most.” So it is with my daily life. The black dog is the one that represents the negative things that are happening in my life. If I dwell on those things then I inevitably will spiral down and become very negative in my focus and attitude. On the other hand, if I focus on the blessings in my life I am uplifted and grateful. That is easier said than done, isn’t it? The last six months have been some of the most trying HIGHER CALL by Bob Ow Black Dog, White Dog times that I have ever had in my business life. The weather has been nothing short of terrible and roping came to a standstill until recently. Like many of us I have been enduring the “winter without end” with dark gloomy skies virtually every day. All in all it has been a test of my faith and a test on what dog to feed. Unfortunately I have to confess that it has been far too easy for me to feed that black dog and have a negative unthankful attitude. This to shall pass is the mantra that I have been telling myself daily. Inevitably spring and summer will come along and (Lord willing) my life will improve. However, the question of which dog to feed is a conscious one that I have to make many times a day. It is one of faith. God has told me that He is for me and not against me in the Bible. He has good plans for me…also in the Bible. He has said that in this world we will have tribulation (that has to be the biggest understatement that I have ever seen) but to be of good cheer for He has overcome the world. There are countless other scriptures that encourage faith. Just writing them encourages me. That is an example of feeding the white dog. We are promised tribulation but we are also promised divine help and intervention. It’s quite the battle. Team roping is a wonderful metaphor for daily life. Some days when you back into the box all goes well and you win or place. Some days no matter how hard you try, it does not work out. However, as my friend Mike Angelini has pointed out on many occasions, we are very blessed to even be in the arena chasing steers and competing on such a nice day. Mike has picked some strategic times to remind me of this fact and it works for me. I reflect on the fun that we are having. I reflect on the fact that I have some great horses that are pretty easy keepers. I look at my new horse trailer and fairly new Ford dually and realize that I have been blessed in many ways. I need to feed that white dog because I have a lot to feed him on a daily basis. So do you. I recently attended two funerals. One of them was for a guy that was younger than me and one of them was for someone that was quite a bit older. I am sure this is not an unusual thing to experience for some of the older ones that are reading RSN. At the older man’s funeral I saw people that I had not seen in over 50 years. Believe me that will make you realize your age. I realized that I am fortunate to even be riding a horse let alone team roping. At the younger man’s funeral I realized the obvious; that God had allowed me to keep going and keep roping and keep enjoying life. Part of enjoying life, for me, is writing this column. I have many, many more things to be grateful for. Really, too much to list here. I do not have an absence of food for the white dog. My hunch is that you don’t either. Be grateful, enjoy God, rope great. bobowlpl@aol.com Bob Ow lives in Ferndale, California on the northern coast. He and his wife Jo Anna, own a small 5 acre ranch and two really good rope horses. Bob is an independent financial advisor (which pays for his roping expenses), and an elder at a Ferndale Community Church.
PAGE 6 ROPERS SPORTS NEWS MAY 2023 Green Memorial Team Roping: A Great Day & Huge Blessing By The Green Family CERES, CALIF. – The Jesus is Lord Memorial Roping held in honor of Vernon and Rickey Green on April 9th was a great day and huge blessing. Our blessings came in so many ways, with the huge crowd at church service and Trey Johnson sharing God’s word in a powerful way along with a powerful and heartfelt testimony from Joe Nevis. Several people accepted Jesus that morning, making it a great start to the day. We have so many people to thank, starting with Shane and Kim Parson, for allowing us to put this on at their beautiful facility, Diamond Bar Arena, in Ceres. Thank you to Jeff Henley for always being our #1 flagger and doing a great job and Brenda Robbins for working hard in the booth keeping everything running smoothly. Huge shout-out to Jenny Sherbo for her awesome job of organizing and facilitating the dummy ropings; Linda Gore for stuffing all the Easter eggs, what a job that was. Thank you also to Phyllis Carvalho for adding a new event for the kids, the Nikki Hagemann stick horse barrel race was a lot of fun for all who participated. Thank you to Travis and Tanner Kent for their help and for bringing the cattle. I want to thank all my family for all the help and support that they provided. We couldn’t do it without everyone contributing. We were so blessed to have so much support with awards, cash donations and physical help with everything. It helps ease the pain our family has endured by the response you all have shown us. What a great honor and tribute to the life that Vernon and Rickey lived. Thank you for all who came and shared this awesome day with us. We hope you all had a great time.
