ProRodeo Announces 2024 Hall Of Fame Inductees COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO – Kaycee Feild, who set the gold standard for PRCA bareback riders, winning an event record six PRCA World Championships, headlines the 2024 ProRodeo Hall of Fame class. Feild, who won PRCA World Championships in (2011-14, 2020-21), is joined in the class by contestants – team roper Art Arnold, a 1968 RCA World Champion; bull rider, the late Blue Stone, a PRCA World Champion in 2001 and 2002; stock contractor Sammy Andrews; bullfighter Darrell Diefenbach, who was selected to work the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 12 times (2001-12), notable J.D. Yates, who made the NFR as a team roping header and heeler; standout bull Mr. T of Burns Rodeo Company (1986 PRCA Bull of the Year, and Bull of the NFR in 1986 and 1989), rodeo committee from the TriState Rodeo in Fort, Madison, Iowa; and barrel racers Marlene (Eddleman) McRae, the 1983 WPRA World Champion and Jeana Day, the 1974 WPRA World Champion. The 2024 Ken Stemler Pioneer Award, which recognizes those who have provided groundbreaking, innovative ideas and forward thinking that help the development, advancement, and success of the PRCA and or the Hall of Fame and their missions is being awarded to Bob Feist, who was a contestant, announcer at the 1979 National Finals Steer Roping and 1980 National Finals Rodeo and founder of the immensely popular Bob Feist Invitational Team Roping. They will be enshrined July 13 during ceremonies at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo. “I’m kind of surprised this came so fast,” said Feild, who retired following the 2023 PRCA regular season. “What an amazing honor. I think of my display next to my late father Lewis Feild, a guy who was my hero. To look back on my career and to be inducted into the Hall of Fame it is goal you don’t really have control of, but at the same time if you accomplish your goals, you can cross that goal off someday. This is a big win for me.” Feild obtained his PRCA card in 2007 and qualified for the National Finals Rodeo 13 times – (2008-15, 2018-22) tied for fifth most ever for bareback riders. The Genola, Utah, cowboy won the average four times in 2011-14. He joins his father, the late Lewis Feild in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Lewis, a five-time PRCA World Champion in the allaround 1987-89; bareback riding 1985 and ‘86, and Kaycee are believed to be the first father-son duo to be inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame as contestants. Feild also has a bareback riding record 29 NFR round wins. “I was blessed with a durable body and blessed with my dad as long as I had him (before he passed),” Feild said. “My resiliency, grit, determination all that played into what I did. I’m kind of loss for words because I’m so surprised. I thought I would have five or six years to prepare for this speech.” Arnold, who competed at the NFR 10 times (1959-68 and 1970) – all as a header except for 1962 – was thrilled to get the call from the Hall. “This means a lot because there is not a lot of people who get to be (inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame),” said Arnold, who was a reserve world champion in 1967. “It took a lot of practice and trying to perfect techniques and just watching guys and learning from guys who did it well.” Stone, who passed away March 13, 2022, at the age of 43, earned his first world championship by earning $174,772 to edge Cody Hancock by less than $10,000. He followed that up in 2002 by earning $157,707 and defeated Myron Duarte by less than $9,000. Those were the only two appearances Stone made at the NFR. Stone was the first cowboy to win back-to-back PRCA Bull Riding World Championships since Don Gay won three world titles in a row from PRCA announcer of the NFSR in 1979 and the NFR in 1980, Bob Feist, will be recognized with the Ken Stemler award. In his two NFR appearances, Stone rode 14 of his bulls and earned a combined $205,851 – $112,322 in 2001 and $93,529 in 2002. “This is one thing that I know he always wanted to have done and it’s a huge honor,” said Chris Willard, Stone’s cousin. “I just wish he was here for it. PAGE 4 ROPERS SPORTS NEWS MAY-JUNE 2024 For 72 Years, 3 Rivers Lions Club Roping Is Still Something Special By Mike Sweeney Special To Ropers Sports News Every year in late April the Three Rivers Lions Club hosts one of the most successful equestrian family events anywhere in California. The primary event is team roping, but there other things going on for the family to enjoy. There is barrel racing for all ages, calf branding, pig scramble, kids dummy roping, raffles and some fantastic vendors. If that isn’t enough the Lions Club serves some of the best eats. Every night something different and crazy good. All that and I haven’t talked about all the great ropers from all over the western United States. Over the three days of roping there were 10 different ropings. Each roping has a special skill level. This year a total of 1,261 teams competed for saddles, buckles and many other awards. That is a 14% growth over 2023. To win one of the Three Rivers roping buckles is a “bucket list” item. One would wonder how does something last for so long and still be so exciting? Let’s start with the Three Rivers Lions Club. Through the years they have been blessed with some great leaders, none better than Jennifer Nicholson. Jennifer is a professional entertainer and knows how to put on a spectacular event. Jennifer lives just up the road from the arena. She has traveled the world with the Riata Ranch Cowboy Cowgirls. Next you need a stock contractor that understands team roping and what it takes to be successful. Eric Cozzitorto puts on great ropings all over California that are sanctioned by the American Cowboy Team Roping Association. Eric not only provides the best stock for the event, he has one of the best staffs in the business. He would want me to do a shout out to Mac and Sadie Mullins and Brenda Robbins for taking care of the office, flagger Ward Fuhlendorf and Carlos and the crew keeping the cattle at the ready. This proves that” Diefenbach said. “I just remember being a 17-year-old kid in Australia getting up every day and going to work. I had my list of goals in my bedroom at home and they were each small steps, one at a time. I had the goal to the make the NFR and I got that done at 27. Then my very last goal was to get put in the Hall of Fame. Now, here we are.” J.D. Yates competed at the NFR in team roping from (1975-1993, 1996 and 2002). He also qualified for the NFSR in 1988-89, 1991, 1994, 199698, 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010. He is also the youngest contestant to qualify for the NFR at 15 years, four months in 1975. “When I started rodeoing, I didn’t wake up that morning and say, ‘I wanted to have a Hall of Fame of career,” Yates said. “I was blessed to do what I got to do. Anybody that says it isn’t a dream come true to get into that (ProRodeo Hall of Fame) are not telling the truth. For me to be put in with the people who are in there is an amazing honor.” In 1984, J.D. was a part of the only father-son-daughter trio compete at the NFR in the same year. His dad, Dick also qualified in team roping, while his sister Kelly qualified in barrel racing. Mr. T was a rank bull that left his mark in the PRCA by bucking off his share of ProRodeo Hall of Famers, including Jim Sharp in Round 10 of the 1989 NFR, propelling Tuff Hedeman to a PRCA World Championship. “Having Mr. T brought us from just being a small Wyoming outfit to being a small Wyoming outfit with a famous bull,” laughed Hal Burns, the owner of Mr. T. “He was just extremely athletic. He went to the NFR six years in a row, and it takes a special type of bull to have that sort of longevity in the sport of rodeo.” On the rodeo committee side, this honor for Fort Madison means a lot. “For a city of just over 10,000 people we draw a crowd from across the Midwest and the country for that matter. We are awfully proud of that,” said Chuck Kempker, the President of the Board of Directors at the Tri-State Rodeo. “The volunteers, the sponsors and the community of Fort Madison are a huge asset ProRodeo Hall Of Fame... From Page 3 Marlene (Eddleman) McRae (pictured), the 1983 WPRA World Champion and Jeana Day, the 1974 WPRA World Champion will both be inducted into the WPRA Barrel Racing category. – Photo Courtesy of WPRA to our rodeo every single year. We wouldn’t have this honor without them.” The ProRodeo Hall of Fame started inducting WPRA members in 2017, and McRae and Day are thrilled to join that elite group. “It was great to hear it from Jimmie (Munroe), that was outstanding in itself,” stated McRae about receiving the call on her induction from WPRA President Jimmie Munroe. “This is a dream come true. Rodeo has made so many of my dreams come true and I would have to say this tops the cake. This was probably the final dream that I have dreamed of for my rodeo career. Being from Colorado, I am really glad WPRA members are now part of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. It means a lot to me because I have been around the Hall the majority of my life. I wish both my parents were still alive to see it, but they will see it happen from heaven.” Day echoed McRae. “I was just blown away when I got the news from Jimmie (Munroe),” stated Day upon learning of her induction. “I was overwhelmed and speechless and for those that know me it takes a lot for me to be speechless. I feel so honored and blessed to be receiving this news today. I am just all smiles.” Feist, who is renowned in rodeo circles, is thrilled to get the prestigious Ken Stemler Pioneer Award. “What an honor, my goodness, I will have to get myself together here,” said Feist. “This means a lot.”

In fact, 7K is the Official Roping Training System of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association. “We are honored to partner with 7K Roping who is committed to the support and advancement of the roping and rodeo industries while staying true to the western family lifestyle,” stated Hannah Miller, WPRA Partnership and Special Events Manager. “The first few months of this partnership have been great, and we look forward to growing the relationship to provide even more opportunities for our members.” 7K Roping products are endorsed by some of the best in the business including 2022 WPRA World Champion Martha Angelone, three-time world champion Erin Johnson, 2023 National Finals Breakaway Roping average champion Cheyanne McCartney and 2021 WPRA Breakaway Roping Rookie of the Year Madison Outhier. Their products 7K endorsees include Cheyanne McCartney, Martha Angelone and Erin Johnson. – WPRA photo by Rodeobum are proudly made and shipped from the Lone Star State of Texas. “We’re proud that the WPRA has chosen to partner with 7K Roping and feel that our missions are aligned,” said Sandy Stephens, owner of 7K Roping. “Just as the WPRA continues to raise the standard of competitions for women in rodeo, we strive to provide equipment that helps all levels of ropers elevate their game to the fullest potential.” In addition to being the Official Training System of the WPRA, they were also a partner of the 2023 WPRA World Finals in Waco and the National Finals Breakaway Roping in Las Vegas. In fact, during the WPRA World Finals they sponsored the breakaway roping event and presented the average champion, Willow Wilson, with a brand new 7K Something Horse & Calf Sled. Wilson of Baggs, WY, is looking to make more headlines in 2024 as she also won the year-end title in the Mountain States Circuit to earn a berth to the NFR Open in July. Her new 7K training system will come in handy in preparing for that event as well as the rest of the season where she also competes in PRCA rodeos as a team roper with her husband Todd. Be sure to keep an eye on the 7K Roping WPRA ProRodeo Breakaway World Standings throughout the year to see who will be in the top 15 come the end of October and qualify for the 2024 National Finals Breakaway Roping. PAGE 10 ROPERS SPORTS NEWS MAY-JUNE 2024 because it felt like we were roping back in the day, like Jake and Clay did.” Seven-time Champs of the World Jake Barnes and Clay Cooper make everyone’s Team Roping Mount Rushmore short list. They won the 1988 BFI together, after Clay first won it with brother-in-law Bret Beach in 1982. Junior looks up to Jake and Champ professionally, like everybody else. Nogueira made his first of now 10 Wrangler National Finals Rodeos roping behind Barnes the same year he earned 2014 Resistol Rookie Driggers and Nogueira Check Big Bucket List Box With 2024 BFI Win By Kendra Santos GUTHRIE, OKLAHOMA – It’s a roping rarity when teams rise up to dynasty status, and last names are optional. Jake and Clay. Speed and Rich. We all know who you’re talking about. The already notorious team of Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira just etched their names even deeper into roping’s record books with their $162,000 bucket-list win at the 47th annual Bob Feist Invitational Team Roping Classic on March 30 at the Lazy E Arena. With five gold buckles, well over $5 million in combined career earnings and now a BFI “W” between them, Kaleb and Junior is all you really need. Winning is surely no surprise to these two anymore. And yet, this particular win meant more than a little extra. “I was probably more emotional today winning the BFI than when I won the world the first time,” said two-time World Champion Header Driggers, the 34-year-old pride of Hoboken, Georgia. “That’s crazy for me to even say, just because it took me a long time to get it done and we were so close (to winning the world) so many times before we won it. “Winning the BFI is a topthree win in my career. I would rank it right up there with the world titles, because of the prestige of it. I think this is my 17th BFI, and my best previous finish was fourth with Junior in 2018. I watched all my idols rope at the BFI as a little kid, and it’s the longest-standing roping. My idols competed in it. The BFI is the pinnacle. This win was a long time coming. This is what I’ve always dreamed of.” The Feist features a fat 100% payback. But winning it meant so much more to Nogueira than money, too. “There are a couple rodeos I’d still like to win, but the BFI was ‘the one’ we wanted to win as far as the ropings go,” added Nogueira, 33, who’s from Presidente Prudente, Sao Paulo, Brazil, but like Driggers makes his second home in Texas. “You can’t beat the prestige of the BFI, and I’ve spent years and years trying to win this. Kaleb and I have been very successful in our careers, but never conquered the BFI until now. “The conditions at this roping today were like the BFI used to be, with the long score and strong steers that ran hard all day. This is a very cool win, Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira were flawless to win the first BFI of their already legendary careers. – BFI Photo by Andersen CbarC Photography Driggers and Nogueira made a horse race out of their first victory lap at The Feist. – BFI Photo by Andersen CbarC Photography Kaleb and Junior FaceTiming their fams as the emotional happy tears turned to celebratory laughter. – BFI Photo by Andersen CbarC Photography See DRIGGERS & NOGUEIRA On Page 12 Heeler of the Year honors. But it’s so personal between Nogueira and the man who took him into his heart and home when he arrived broke and with very few words of English in his vocabulary from Brazil. Junior lost his dad, Lucinei Nunes Nogueira Sr, when he was 5. Junior calls Jake “Dad” now, and named his own son Jake Nogueira. Junior and Jaqueline were expecting a little sister for Isabella and Jake in April. Kaleb and Nicole are expecting a boy—their first baby—in May. As their families expand, it’s prime time for a windfall win like this one for $81 grand a man. “With the baby coming, we’re going to buy a bus to rodeo out of,” Driggers grinned. “This’ll go a long way toward that.” Kaleb and Junior were third high call in the short round, and stomped on the gas with a 6.84-second run to seal the deal with 44.76 on six strong, old-school Mexican steers. Beyond that $162,000, they were also awarded Coats Saddles, Gist Buckles, YETI Coolers, Resistol Hats and Hat Packs, full-quill-ostrich Justin Boots, B&W Hitches, Best Ever Pads and Equinety. The Four-Legged Partners Driggers rode Chics Like Hickey, a 9-year-old chestnut he calls Oliver, who’s a halfbrother to Cody Snow’s renowned buckskin mare Annie. “I got Oliver when he was 6, and he’s my main go-to jackpot horse,” Kaleb said. “I rode him at the Lone Star Shootout (Driggers finished second, third and fourth with Wesley Thorp, Jade Corkill and Nicky Northcott, respectively, on that fast track the other day; Driggers and Nogueira also won the 2024 Crawfish Invitational with Oliver’s help), and he’s my longer-score horse at the rodeos, too. “I think Oliver’s one of the most underrated head horses of all time. He always gives me a chance to win, no matter what. He doesn’t stand there like a statue. But when I drop my hand, he’s rolling. He can run, and his foot work keeps their heads and opens them up for Junior to heel.” If Nogueira’s BFI buckskin looked familiar, that was old Lucky Bucky. PAGE 12 ROPERS SPORTS NEWS MAY-JUNE 2024 ciation—came from nine-time NFR heeler Cesar de la Cruz. “Lucky Bucky’s so fast, and he makes a good turn,” Junior said. “I bought him from Cesar in 2022. I jackpot very good on him, and rodeo on him, too. I love how fast he runs, and the way he follows the steer after the turn makes it easy.” Horses of the BFI It’s all about the horsepower at the BFI, and Jake Cooper Clay’s RLLittleBit and Trey Yates’ Marlboro Cat were named Head and Heel Horse of the 2024 BFI. Both cowboys have quite the horse history at this roping, as it was Jake’s third Head Horse of the BFI award and Trey’s second Heel Horse of the BFI honor. Clay, who won the 2022 BFI with Billie Jack Saebens, made this year’s short round with Yates heading on a 9-year-old sorrel he calls Louie. “My cousin Wayne Clay sent me this horse when he was 6 to make a head horse out of him to sell,” Jake said. “He was a ranch horse that hadn’t been roped on until he was 6. We pig hunted on him before I started roping on him. He liked the roping, and I didn’t think we should sell him. So Wayne told me we’ll just be partners on him as long as I want to ride him. And here we are. “Louie’s just easy to rope on. He scored really good today, was really good in the field and faced good. He just gives me the opportunity to do my job every time. I don’t know how anybody else would like him, but he’s good for me.” This was Clay’s fourthstraight BFI short round, and the head horses he’s ridden have everything to do with that. Jake took Head Horse of the 2021 BFI honors on Kevin Williams’ LeRoy, then Head Horse of the 2022 BFI on his horse Sun before this third horse award on Louie. “I started heading in 2020, and have been super blessed to ride some great horses,” he said. “Sun’s 19 now, and I’ll still rodeo on him some. But this is a tough day on a head horse, so Louie got the call. Louie and Sun share a pen at home, so I figure Sun talked Louie into doing good today.” Zac Small and Wesley Thorp won the 2016 BFI with Small on Sun, right before Small put his ropes on hold to go to vet school. When Driggers and Nogueira finished fourth in the 2018 BFI average, Kaleb was riding Sun. “A head horse is everything at this roping,” Clay said. “The steers run hard, it’s the longest barrier of any roping we go to, and it’s all day long. The BFI is the hardest setup, and it takes a special horse to be good at this roping. They have to be able to do it, and they have to be tough.” Three generations of the Yates family, including patriarch Dick, JD and sister Kelly (in 1984, the three of them became the first and only fatherson-daughter combo to compete the same year in NFR history), and now Trey are all about the horses. Trey calls this year’s Heel Horse of the BFI Sugar Daddy down at the barn, and the 10-year-old blaze-faced chestnut with two white socks is a former futurity and show horse that’s been in the Yates remuda three years now. “There were times I about gave up on him,” Trey said. “But this horse has got grit and heart, because every time I about gave up on him, he did something amazing. He wants to do right, he wants to win and he puts me in position to win. When I don’t win, it’s not his fault. “Sugar Daddy was amazing all day today. He stayed collected the whole time, and gave me 150%. That’s what makes great horses—they give you their all every single time. And this horse does that.” Yates won his first Heel Horse of the BFI award in 2020 on Nic Of Shine, a black horse he called Tux. “Tux was one in a million, too,” Trey said. “This award means a lot to my family. When your horse stands out over 125 horses, that’s a pretty big accomplishment. My dad won Head Horse of the BFI twice, and a Heel Horse of the BFI award (JD and cousin Jay Wadhams won the 2010 BFI with Jay riding JD’s Colonel Cal Dee, aka “A”; JD’s Head Horse of the BFI awards were won in 2008 on Buster, and in 2018 on Turbo), as well. We take pride in our horses as a family. If I get my butt kicked, it won’t be because I didn’t show up prepared and my horse wasn’t ready.” Clay and Yates were presented $1,000 bonus checks, Lost Prairie Bronzes by Steve Miller, Best Ever Pads, Classic Equine Horse Blankets and Equinety. In Other BFI Headlines Clay Smith and Coleby Payne were second high call behind Bubba Buckaloo and Daniel Braman (who had a leg on their last one), and were this year’s reserve BFI champs with 45.20 on six steers to earn $101,000 plus Lazy L Saddles, B&W Hitches, Best Ever Pads and Justin Boots. Ketch Kelton and Denton Dunning finished third in 46.77 seconds for $78,000 to continue their 2024 winning rampage, and Colby Lovell and Dakota Kirchenschlager rounded out the top four in the average with 47.7 on six for $59,000, with Dakota K riding Driggers’ gray stud Metallic Payday. Fast at The Feist Reigning World Champion Team Ropers Tyler Wade and Wesley Thorp won this year’s Rickey Green Fast Time Award with their 4.87-second sizzler in Round 5. It was the only 4-second run at this year’s roping, and they were awarded full-quill-ostrich Justin Boots and boot jacks in addition to the plaques in honor of the late gunslinger Green, who won the 1988 BFI heeling for the late Mark “Pickles” Arnold. California native Rickey was fearless, an early-days crossfire king, and watching him pull off wild shots over the neck of a big, black heel horse he called Cowboy was one of the most memorable sights of his era. Rickey would be so proud to see two fellow fast-and-fearless ropers of today honored in his name. Game Day Game Plan Driggers has roped at 11 NFRs since his first Finals in 2011 with Brad Culpepper. The 2009 Overall and Heading Rookie of the Year won his two gold buckles in 2021-22 with Nogueira, who also owns the world all-around championship dated 2016. Team Driggers-Nogueira has huddled up and strategized for every possible scenario since joining forces a few years back. But they decided to keep their BFI strategy super simple this time. And it was all about the long game, as in the six-steer average crown. “The BFI is not something you can set out and say you’re going to win,” Driggers said. “This is a roping that comes to you more than you go to it. You need a couple good steers in there, no doubt. But we’ve had to learn to crawl before we could walk. And we haven’t had very much success here before now. “This time, we made it about personal gains one step at a time—getting out of the barrier, sharp head loops, good handles, good heel loops and strong finishes. That was our game plan—to just go do our jobs, and let the chips fall where they would. Sticking to our game plan all day definitely helped TOMMY LEE LIVESTOCK, LLC presents NEVADA ACTRA ROPINGS Must Be An ACTRA Member To Rope Sat., April 13, May 18, June 1, July 13, August 10 & Sept. 28 - Finals FRIDAY, JULY 19 SU 5:30pm, Rope 6pm #5.5 Pick Or Draw...................................................3 for #40 #6 Hdcp.
