From Page 14 Wes Campbell Sr. Sept. 20, 1939 - April 5, 2024 EXETER, CALIF. – Wes lived a full life. He was born in Visalia, Calif., then moved to Exeter and stayed until the very end. Born and raised in a farming family, his love for livestock lead him to the world of horses and cattle. In high school, Wes qualified for the National High School Rodeo finals. He traveled by jumping rail cars in order to make it to New Mexico. It was there that Wes entered and won the bareback event. Wes led two 30-mule strings in the wide lands of the Sierra Nevadas, from Fresno to Bakersfield, supplying hunters and ranch hands with supplies and goods. Wes was doing what he loved and living life to the fullest. Working for the Riata Ranch, Correa Ranch, and Gill Ranch, Wes started many colts. As one would guess, his hard work produced winners. His love for team roping was apparent to everyone. A lot of people called him partner over the years. Selling cattle supplements kept him busy and chatting. Spending money was not his favorite thing to do, but he never hesitated to buy a young child ice cream at the sale barn. Far more people than we will ever know have been mentored and inspired by Wes regarding horsemanship, roping, showing and any other subject he felt you should learn. Wes is preceded in death by his parents Winfred and Irene Campbell and older brother Ronald Campbell. He is survived by his son Wesley “Lee” and Jodi (Davenport) Campbell; granddaughters Jordan Campbell, Amanda Sant and Hailee Runels; his sister Ina and Joe Ponzo; nieces Kellie Ponzo and Rhonda Campbell; nephews Michael Campbell and Dana Campbell; great nephew Jonathan Ponzo; and by his best buddies, Lester and Tuffy. Good luck to you, old riding’ partner. May your first loop always hit, may your pony never set up hard, and your dally never slip. A lunch with refreshments and remembrances was held May 4 at the Richie Barn in Visalia. of their careers, it’s hard to find events that have eluded them. “The BFI is one of the majors a guy grows up wanting to win,” said Driggers, who’s the only four-time winner of The American; he’s won $100 grand at the world’s richest one-day rodeo twice with Nogueira. “I’ve been watching BFI tapes since I was a kid. It’s a great roping, and it’s very prestigious to come out on top roping big, strong Mexican steers that run. It made for a long day, but a good day. The hardest part might be the hour and a half between runs. A guy has to try to stay mentally focused during that down time. It’s fairly easy to make a mistake at this roping if you’re not paying attention. “This is just a sweet win for us. It sounds weird, but this one is about a lot more than just the money. Junior and I both wanted to do our jobs today. Winning the BFI is so satisfying, and the prestige that comes with it is just the cherry on top for us.” “It’s always cool to win, but this is a special win,” Nogueira agreed. “I needed this. It took me a lot of years of trying, and a lot of perseverance to win it. You’ve got to be aggressive, but not beat yourself. You have to have one of your best days of roping ever to win the BFI. I’m very happy. And thankful. “You can’t copy rodeos like Salinas (California) or Cheyenne (Wyoming). And there’s nothing else like this roping. There’s only one BFI.” THE FEIST results MARCH 30, 2024 Average: 1. Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira, 44.76, $160,000. 2. Clay Smith and Coleby Payne, 45.2, $100,000. 3.
