Getting to hear Broc’s voice again brings back his memory to all those who knew and loved him while also educating the people who didn’t know him that this is not just “The Cresta” held the Tuesday prior to the Red Bluff Round Up. This year was a special year for Broc Mitchell, the son of Broc Cresta’s childhood best friend Spencer Mitchell, as he opened the gate for the honorary first steer to trot down the arena with Spencer’s head rope on it to pay tribute to his namesake in a moment of silence. The Open Roping got underway after the tribute to Broc with 87 of the toughest open ropers competing in a progressive five steer roping and $20,000 dollars in added money. The short round was truly one to be present for. Ten of the 20 teams in the short round blitzed their final steer with sub 7 second runs that left a second and a half separation between the first and last place checks. Taking home $26,000, Coats saddles and Skyline buckles was the team of Brayden Schmidt and Logan Moore, roping their five head in the time of 33.86 seconds. Brayden Schmidt is a special reminder of how Broc’s legacy and his roping have lived on since his passing. In 2018, Schmidt won the Broc Cresta Memorial Pro-Am Heading division at the age of 13. Now as an up-and-coming professional header, he has won the Broc Cresta Memorial Open Roping six years later. As Schmidt collected his prizes, he told Mandy Staley that his Pro-Am saddle still sits unridden in his parents’ house and he is so honored to be able to now possess the Broc Cresta Open saddle to go with it. This is exactly what Broc would have wanted to see as he looked down on the roping that day, a young gun that has started out as a talented kid, now one of the best high caliber team ropers at the professional level. “Forever. Always.” Has been the motto of the Broc Cresta Memorial Roping since his passing in 2012. Forever is a strong word, but it is obvious that Broc’s legacy will forever shine on and he will always hold a special place in the heart and soul of everyone that knew him and got to rope in his name. “Forever. Always.” Results follow: Open: 5 for $500, enter twice, progressive after one, payoff is per man. Average: 1. Brayden Schmidt and Logan Moore, 33.86, $13,000. 2.
