Since joining the PRCA in 1984, he has qualified for the Wrangler NFR an impressive 18 times. He won the world bareback riding title in 1991 and the aggregate title at the 2001 Wrangler NFR. His dominance extends beyond the world standings — he won the Columbia River Circuit year-end title an incredible 12 times in a row between 1989–2000. Corey is also the only roughstock cowboy to have won the bareback title at the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo three times. Kristie Peterson – Past WPRA Contestant Peterson burst onto the professional rodeo scene in 1989 with her talented horse Bozo. The dynamic duo also won five National Finals Rodeo average titles in a row and placed in 20 consecutive NFR rounds, a record at the time. A rodeo tradition embodied in a cribbage board – now you can play while tracing your path through the most nostalgic rodeo towns en route to the NFR and a Gold Buckle! Tan Hat (or Black Hat) Teal & Tan Boots Even when sitting still on the Speed Trainer, people pull themselves up by the reins when they stand up to rope. I often put the dummy very close to the Speed Trainer where you have to learn to stand up and rope. This helps, especially with the World Series barrier, where it’s easy to get out on top of the steer. The main purpose of the Speed Trainer is to improve your riding. It’s hard to believe how many headers from #7+ on down struggle with roping the dummy close and not pulling on their horse or using their legs. I move the dummy all around like playing “around the world” in basketball. This is to find where peoples’ weaknesses are. The Speed Trainer has four lights: a green, two yellows, and a red. Three seconds after your run is complete the lights will light up according to how hard you pulled on the reins. Green is ideal with red being the worst. The machine is impartial and doesn’t lie, even though most people don’t want to believe they’re pulling on the reins. Your horse should leave off the release of pressure, so the Speed Trainer is designed with a green light lit up when there’s slight tension or pressure on the reins. One of the simplest drills I use is once the light is green, I say “Ready, set, go” and you drop the reins, stand in the saddle with your weight in the stirrups, butt up out of the seat while swinging your rope… all at the same time. Two swings and rope. Once you dally, you stop the clock. A Breaking It Down with Speed Williams So You Got Your New Speed Trainer...Now What? I’m happy to report we have good news about Hali’s road to recovery. We recently took her to a specialist in Houston who told her the tendon she injured will take eight months to two years to completely heal. This injury is pretty rare and short of a major accident she won’t reinjure the tendon. However, after two years if it’s not healed, she may need surgery. She tried to rope a couple of times this year and due to pain, was afraid she was causing more damage. But after the good news from the specialist, she’s been out practicing and roping quite a bit. I’ve had a lot of lessons lately. We’ve been running a pen of steers, then a pen of calves and do this a couple times before watching the video and breaking it all down. She’s been riding all the horses that could possibly make a breakaway horse. She’s excited to get back on the trail and we are currently at a jackpot in Glen Rose, on a Wednesday night, where they have 60 girls entered. Gabriel has been working on his heading quite a bit. He’s been getting on the Speed Trainer by himself and trying to work through a few things. Smarty has been selling quite a few Speed Trainers lately. The Speed Trainer now comes with a QR Code painted on the shoulder that will take customers to videos that show how to use the machine. I enjoy getting messages from people telling me they’ve finally got one. Now is when I have to remind them this is a training tool and not to get frustrated when the lights keep going off. It’s just a fact that ropers in general, breakaway, tie down, and team ropers, don’t realize how much they unintentionally pull on their horse for balance. See SPEED WILLIAMS On Page 22

VIN00648 $174,995 + fees PHOENIX, ARIZONA – On the heels of Wrangler BFI Week presented by Yeti, the Lazy E Arena will host a brand-new 2D barrel race on April 4-5 expected to pay $16,650 to win the average and $7,326 to win a round. That event will be followed on April 6 by the first standalone steer roping held in 11 years at the Lazy E – which was built specifically to host the PRCA’s National Finals of Steer Roping (NFSR). “Our BFI Week has the Lazy E busting at the seams, it’s grown so much,” said Daren Peterson, who with coowner Corky Ullman moved the prestigious Bob Feist Invitational and its accompanying team ropings from Reno, Nevada, to Guthrie during the pandemic. “We love the demand, and it made sense to add a weekend to allow for growth and create shorter Lazy E To Host High-Stakes Barrel Race, Steer Roping days during BFI Week. It’s a great opportunity to fill that, now, with two events that are best showcased in that arena.” Wild West Promotions will produce the barrel race with no memberships required, and ground drug after every three runners. Exhibitions will be offered both mornings with the race starting at noon each day. Entry fees are $2,000 with a 92.5 percent payout and several sidepots available. Pre-entries close on March 29 via the free NextGen Rodeo app, which can be downloaded at EquineSportsAlliance.com. Weekly or monthly payment plans are available, and late entries are accepted for a $50 fee. That Friday night after the barrel race, at 7 p.m. in the Lazy E’s Gold Buckle Cantina, Ullman Peterson Events will host a calcutta for the following day’s $10,000added four-head steer roping, which kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday. The best steer ropers in the world, many of whom hail from Oklahoma, will be gunning for Gist buckles, $10,000 cash added by Pete Carr Pro Rodeo, and a custom Veach trophy saddle, thanks to Clark Quarter Horses and Veach Saddlery. Entries are due March 1 on forms available at BFIWeek. com. The barrel race and steer roping are two of several events recently added inside the world’s largest indoor equestrian arena, which still hosts the Timed Event Championship of the World and now includes the Barrel Futurities of America (BFA) World Championships, the World Championship Junior Rodeo, the Platinum Medal Roping Futurity, and the WCRA’s Stampede at the E. “We have a number of improvements taking place over the next 12-18 months,” said Lazy E General Manager Dan Wall. “We’re adding some new permanent stalls and a 30,000-squarefoot multipurpose building to house trade shows and horse sales, plus we’ll add a new office building for event producers, and a new shower and restroom facility.”

Born to Ervin Quick and Ellen Jones in Van Nuys, California, the family moved to San Jacinto when he was four years old. Mike grew up showing horses in Gymkhanas and Western Pleasure. Seeking a little more adrenaline and the cowboy way of life, he moved on to calf roping, which would become his favorite sport. In 1969 he won the Sierra Circuit. Team roping came to be another sport he loved and he added it to his rodeo resume and had several great partners over the years such as Danny Branco. The rodeo trail is rough and after 21 years and a multitude of injuries, he decided to retire from rodeo. The cowboy way of life continued to call to him and in 1985 he started team penning and became fast friends with John Luiz and John Smalley. They soon dominated the penning world until about 1990. Mike, John, and John held a number of team penning clinics in addition to making a videotape called “The Team Penning Tape.” One of Mike’s fondest memories was being invited to join the Rancheros Visitadores and attending their rides, further involving him in continuing the cowboy tradition in California. Living the Western way of life and sharing knowledge wasn’t just seen in his competing, teaching, and riding, but also in his bit making adventures. When he wasn’t roping or penning, he was working with his father’s business, Quick Bits. Mike’s father, Ervin Quick, was the source of Mike’s inspiration growing up. Ervin Quick was a legend himself. Originally an engineer for a large aircraft company in Trenton, New Jersey, he and his family moved to California, and landed in San Fernando Valley. That’s where he started making bits. He met several affluent people along with talented trainers such as Jimmy Williams. They became very close friends and worked together to come up with great designs for bits that are still in use today. He also made bits for stars such as Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. When Ervin passed in 1983, Mike took over the business. Quick Bits were only made by the Quicks. Mike was a quiet friend and mentor to many. He had a strong personality but also a quick smile and a good story to tell. Mike is survived by his wife, Sally; three sons, Ben, Jimmy, and Roy; and four grandchildren, Rosemary, Anthony, Amanda, and Jamie. He is also survived by many good friends such as Pete Zanetti, Armell Schwarte, Larry Branco, and Eddie Mardon. No services have been planned. Mike Quick working in his shop at “Quick Bits.”

The roping was held at Simpson’s Arena in Wickenburg, and Roper Nation supplied the cattle Quoting Woodard, “It all started back in the COVID years. The chairman of the board of directors asked if anyone had ideas to help bolster our fundraising. Because of COVID, many of the rodeos and fund raising events were canceled. In the meantime, cowboys continued to get hurt and the fund continued to help them financially. That’s when the idea was born to have a Crisis Fund roping.” 505 teams roped in three different pots on this oneday event, raising just over $10,000 for the JCCF. Special thanks go to all the sponsors: Justin Boots, American Hats, PRCA, Cactus Ropes, and Corriente Buckles all donated merchandise to make up the prizeline. Kyle Krisman of Roper National also deserves a tip of the hat for his generous donation of a big portion of the cattle money to bolster our success. There was also a silent auction with items donated by local businesses in Wickenburg, which raised more than $2,000 to add to the total. Thanks to Woodard’s wife and daughter calling on these great local business folks, we found that they like team ropers. They told us during the winter months when the ropers are in town they make their biggest profits! Thanks also to the ropers who came out to support this great cause. Winners in the #7.5 Over 60 roping were Buzz Sweeden and Randy Cumbie. Winners in the #8.5 Over 60 roping were Jeff Jasper and Lee Richmond. Winners in the #9.5 Over 60 roping were Don Schmeling and Dan Ballek.

MARCH 2024 ROPERS SPORTS NEWS PAGE 15 Record $72K Paid For Top Gelding In Red Bluff Sale RED BLUFF, CALIF. – The Red Bluff Gelding Sale (Jan. 23-27) had a lot of changes in 2024, but the same excitement, anticipation and success all remained the same going into the sale Friday night, January 26. Red Bluff hosted an enormous crowd and has become one of the fixtures the community gets to see throughout the year. This year was a special sale because entries were opened to more than geldings for the first time in the sale’s history. This year featured the first “cold bloods” that included a bid of $23,000 for a Gypsy Vanner from Craig and Ashley Wright to lead off this year’s sale. Four head of these horses averaged $16,125. Additionally, this year featured a group of mares. Five mares averaged $25,400 with a high of $49,000. The mares were excellent quality mares that competed right along with the geldings and were showcased remarkably. The sale committee looks for this area of the sale to grow over the next few years. The highlight of the sale certainly had to be the bay six year old gelding, Vyntage, owned by Walt and Mary Vermedahl. The handsome boy was not only the Top Cow Horse, but also named the Stock Horse and Head Horse. He was purchased by Legacy Pro Rodeo, Corvallis, Oregon for $72,000. The horse market has been very competitive over the last several years. Increased sales prices across the nation with fewer and fewer horses available to the public is driving things forward. As Red Bluff consignments rolled in ahead of the deadline, this situation is becoming more and more apparent. It’s simply harder to find the right horse of the right age to fit everyone’s needs. Red Bluff recognized this and is committed to moving forward and adapting to the changing market. What is exciting is that each year, it seems the highselling record is broken. We don’t see this trend changing. anytime soon. We see the highselling horses continuing to get higher, but it will take the right horses to accomplish this. Red Bluff’s criteria for the horse sale haven’t wavered in this high market. Each horse is thoroughly evaluated by several vets, committee members and stockmen. If a horse doesn’t appear to be sound, quality and represented accurately, it is sifted on the spot. This stringent process has given Red Bluff its reputation for generations. Each horse can compete for champion honors in several categories including stock horse, heading, heeling, breakaway, cutting and snaffle bit. Horses are given opportunities to shine in each area, so prospective buyers know exactly what they are bidding on. This multi-day preview style allows for people to truly see what these horses are capable of. It’s really a oneof-a-kind sale.
