The Steve Maddalena Memorial Roping ran August 8 and 9 at the Sierra Valley Roping Club arena in Sierraville, and six pots paid out $17,590.
Ropers keep making the drive up the hill every August for the same reason they always have. Steve Maddalena was a hand and a storyteller in equal measure, a man who could show up at any outfit, go to work in the branding pen and have the whole crew laughing before noon. He was rarely wrong on a cow count, he could fix about anything with baling wire and electrical tape, and people used to call his house when they knew good and well he was not home, just to hear whatever he had left on the answering machine.
His daughter, Lacey Parsons, is a senior account manager here at Ropers Sports News. Her husband, Zack Parsons, won the Elliott Dow Memorial this year with Casey Glazier.
