STUDIO CITY, CALIF. – Hollywood recently acknowledged the accomplishments of team roper and longtime PRCA gold card member (since 1959), Ben “Big Ben” Bates.
Bates was honored by his peers at the 19th annual Silver Spur Awards Banquet, emceed by Bruce Boxleitner. Ben was honored for his stunt work in television and film, and for his military service during the Korean War.
The Reel Cowboys felt Ben upheld their mission statement (see reelcowboys.org) of helping to sustain the Western Heritage through wholesome storylines, values and morals portrayed in the series and films in which he worked. Therefore, they felt Bates was worthy and deserving of receiving their Silver Spur Award.
It was very fitting that Janet Arness (wife of the late James Arness), and their son Jimmy, presented the Silver Spur Award to Ben, since James and Ben had become such close friends in the 25 years they worked together.
While Ben was competing at the Chicago Rodeo in 1967, he was chosen to be the Marlboro Man in print and television ads. In 1970, he received the Andy Award for excellence in these ads.
In 1972, Ben’s riding ability and horsemanship led him to become James Arness’ stunt double in the Gunsmoke TV series. His excellent work in this series led to additional stunt work in the Gunsmoke movies, How The West Was Won, Red River, 13 Days To Glory, The Legend Of The Lone Ranger, McClain’s Law and Banjo Hackett, among others.
While working as a stunt man, Bates also acted in commercials, set records at rodeo arenas and held the position of President of the California Junior Rodeo Association while his children competed in several events. For these accomplishments, he was awarded the Silver Spur this year.
Ben’s military service was also recognized with his receipt of the National Veterans Memorial Medallion at the same awards banquet. He served in the Philippines during the Korean War as a Seabee. He helped construct an airstrip, which many engineers said could not be built. He and his construction battalion completed the task.
Ben greatly appreciates how the Reel Cowboys have honored him, and wishes to thank them, their President Robert Lanthier, Julie Ann Ream, and special thanks to Janet Arness and Jimmy.
