There are not many venues that can accommodate 300 kids, 500 horses, 3 arenas and 400 RV’s in California. So when CHSRA holds it’s bidding process there is not usually much interest. For 13 years they have called Eastern Sierra Tri County Fair in Bishop CA the state finals home. This year the bidding process went a little different and there was some competition for the location for the next 3 years with 2, one-year extensions possible. Both the city of Bishop and the City of Red Bluff rallied to put together very attractive bids to woo the CHSRA board for the next 3 year location. The proposals were presented at the CHSRA board meeting at Challenge of Champions in March and both were very appealing and good for the entire state finals event. But, in the end it was not the bottom line that decided the outcome but the general affection for the great outdoors and small town atmosphere that Bishop offers.
Being ‘small town’ the phone lines jumped to life with the news, Facebook posts, radio announcements and the newspaper all shared what the community really wanted, for CHSRA to return bringing with them revenue and rodeo. Every year the community opens up its arms to our families and makes the week a rodeo ‘vacation’ for our members. The list of things they do to make the week better is endless and the caravan of our members driving into town with not only their horses but boats, bikes, fishing poles and toys is also impressive.
The format this year will again include 2 long rounds, a progressive round for the top 30 and a top 15 finals on Saturday with awards to follow. The top 5 in each event in each district are heading to Bishop June 11-15 with hopes of making the next level, the top 4 continuing on to Nationals in Rock Springs Wyoming.
There are also many to thank for a successful year and a successful finals, and that is our CHSRA State Sponsors, Cactus Saddlery, Cactus Gear, Resistol, Cactus Ropes, Heel O Matic, Ropers Sports News, Platinum Performance and Les Schwab Tires. New this year in partnership with NHSRA the livestream will be available through Ridepass a national sponsor. Follow our Facebook for results and info on how to subscribe to the livestream. See you at the rodeo!
