CERES, CALIF. – Sherry Cervi once again came to California to produce her West Coast Championships at the Diamond Bar Arena in Ceres May 31-June 2. This was a West Coast Barrel Racing Association event.
Whitlee Burgess was the winner of the 12 & Under Division aboard her horse Dude, while Lea Orsburn captured the 13-17 Year Old Division riding Dance N Spin A Lena. Both were awarded Crown C saddles as well as piles of cash.
Ropers Sports News had a chance to catch up with the 12 & Under Division winner Whitlee Burgess and ask her a few questions about her win.
RSN: Tell us about the horse that you rode for the win.
WB: I won the 1D saddle on Top Time Dude. Dude is a big strong paint horse that we bought from Shella Dewhurst in January. I am very thankful she sold him to me and gave me a chance to ride such a good barrel horse. She has been tons of help and very generous. We bought him at the beginning of High School rodeo season. I have spent a lot of time learning to ride him. I also won the 3D in the 1st go on my old rodeo horse, Soda Road. He is a 23 year old bay gelding that my mom used to barrel race on. She gave him to me a few years ago when I started Jr rodeos.
RSN: What other horses do you own?
WB: My family owns 15 horses. A few we compete on are…Foxy, a mare I patterned in the barrels and started heeling on. Now my dad heels on her at the CCPRA rodeos. Sarah is my all-around rope horse that I share with my brother. My favorite horse is my mini mare, Pudding. I spend all my extra time with her and her colt Hercules.
RSN: What other events and rodeo associations do you compete in?
WB: I am a member and compete at rodeos and jackpots; ACBRA, NCJRA, CJHSRA, WCRA as well as Junior rodeos, high school rodeos, open barrel races and team ropings. I entered my first CCPRA rodeo in Cottonwood this year.
I love barrel racing and team roping, but I also steer stop, breakaway rope, pole bend and tie goats.
RSN: What does winning Sherry’s race mean to you?
WB: It ia an amazing feeling. Sherry is my hero and I admire her! I have had many tough times at this race in the past, but I also had fun. I am so proud to win my first Sherry Cervi saddle in the 1D.
RSN: Have you ever won a saddle?
WB: This is the first barrel saddle I have ever won. I won an all-around cowgirl rope saddle at the Monterey County Sheriff’s Posse rodeo two years ago. I had to skip that rodeo this year to attend the Sherry Cervi race.
