PLYMOUTH, CA — Some sports just won’t work well in mud. Rodeo on the other hand just gets more interesting. March proved to be one of our wettest months ever in California and the Amador County Fairgrounds did not escape mother nature either. The Challenge Of Champions Rodeo, an invitational rodeo held by CHSRA March 25, 26 and 27th was a huge success despite the weather. Boasting its 14th year, producer Craig Williams was a little nervous just weeks before when the rain just kept coming.
Although it rained that weekend as well, the construction of the Benny Brown arena proved to withstand all that was given for the entire weekend. Many contestants praised the fun time had by all and the arena times were record breaking in poles and close in barrels. Macy Devenport ran a 19.9 on the good horse Birch and won the average. Things weren’t so great for the livestock though. With the unfortunate broken pipe out back and the consistant rain, the stock contractors and the rodeo committee made the decision to move the roughstock and roping steers into the arena for the night to eat and lay down. Many a barrel racer was skeptical about how the arena would recover but thanks to the handy work of Clayton, the tractor driver, the short round went perfectly and you could hardly tell that the motley crew had been there all night. Many thanks to Cargill, who sponsored the All-Around scholarships and the Special rodeo, which was moved indoors. Also thank you to Craig Williams who always puts in tireless hours making this event happen. All our rodeo committee, board, staff and judges were great sports too.
