BISHOP, CALIF – The California High School Rodeo Association celebrated 40 years at the State Finals in Bishop Ca. June 11-16.
A second generation walked into the arena and brought with it a rich heritage of competition, family values and history. Many of this year’s competitors were sons and daughters of CHSRA Alumni. While most CHSRA alumni will find success in areas not covered in the PSN, the fondness of the memories shared with the next generation are still the same as those who go on to win world titles.
Congratulations to CHSRA Dist. #6’s Billie Holman and CHSRA Dist. #7’s Taylor Santos Karney on their All-Around Cowgirl and Cowboy win.
The fair town of Bishop again rose to the occasion with sponsorships, community support, volunteers and spectators. Fair Manager, Jim Tatum worked tirelessly to make sure the grounds were quickly re-organized from the famed Mule Days event to facilitate this 3-arena rodeo. The Bishop Chamber, the City of Bishop and many others are greatly appreciated for their work and time spent.
The Anniversary Event was one of the best ever. Rocking M Rodeo brought outstanding stock, Dave Woods shipped in great cutting cattle and the students were as tough as ever. The scholarship committee awarded over $28,000 in scholarships and all the events were spectacular to watch. Walt Woodard came and shared his wit and wisdom with the students on Tuesday morning. The PRCA presented ‘Rodeo 101’ for those interested in the next level. We had a fly-by at the opening ceremonies thanks to a friend of high school rodeo, John Beery. The fun did not stop until we whittled it all down to the top 4 in each event that formed the 2012 National Team. Of course all this was possible due to a great rodeo staff, tons of volunteers and directors and most of all, lots of moms and dads.
In August, the CHSRA begins plans for the new year with rodeos starting in September for all of the nine districts. We are on facebook at California High School Rodeo Association and our website is chsra.org. We invite all 6th through 12th graders to come and participate in this great organization that is working hard to preserve our Western Heritage and promote family values.
We hope to see you at the next rodeo!
