SALINAS, CALIF. – The 11th Annual Doyle W. Hoskins Memorial Team Roping and 9th Annual Barrel Race were held July 10th & 11th at the Monterey County Sherriff Posse Grounds in Salinas.
Wow! Can’t believe we have been doing this for 11 years. It’s such a great feeling to have the continued support over the years and to see the same people come back year after year. It is such a perfect way to celebrate the life of a man who meant so much to so many people.

The ground Friday night could not have been better!! Thank you to Chris Nielsen of Chris Nielsen Tractor Sales for not only the donation of the tractor, but the time you spent preparing the ground and dragging for us during the race. You did an amazing job. Thank you to Sharon Hoskins, Patti Silva, Nicole Buck, and Cammy Schneider for all your help with announcing and taking entries and making sure everything ran smoothly for the race. We had a great office crew Saturday! Thank you so much to Lisa Jones, Monica Burgess, Marie Bankus, and Lauri Rippe for doing such a wonderful job and keeping those ropers on their toes all day. Thank you to Sabby Pemberton, Gary, Rena and Rose Escobar for bringing up cattle all day. Our chute help did a great job keeping things moving along. We would also like to thank anyone that opened a gate, picked up a hat or set up a barrel, you guys helped make our barrel race and roping run smoothly. Thank you to Doylelyn Agee and Cheri Escobar for working the apparel booth all weekend. Thank you to Todd Utterback and Larry Branco for flagging all day, you guys did a great job! We would like to say a special thank you to Steve Simons for providing all the great cattle that he brings every year. Last but not least we would like to thank each and every one that came out this year to support us in honoring such a great man.
A total of 685 teams competed for the prestigious awards at the Doyle W. Hoskins Memorial Roping. Winners of the #7 Handicap Pick & Draw received Skyline knives dedicated to Colin Coady, winners of the Open Draw Pot received halters dedicated to Jim Rodriguez Sr. The Jr/ Sr, Mixed, Century winners received Hy O Silver Buckles dedicated to Pat Deaton. The #9 Handicap Pick & Draw winners received a Skyline back cinch with buckles.
High money winners CJ DeForest #3.5 & over and Clayton Graham #3 & under received fully tooled Best Ever Saddles. Second high money winners Dalton Pearce #3.5 & over and Darrick Hoskins #3 & under received Hy O Silver Buckles. Third high money winners Joey Acevedo #3.5 & over and Justin Wilkinson #3 & under won Scott Thomas breastcollars. Highest placing girl Krystal Clausen, highest placing senior David Motes, and highest placing junior Colby Strickland won Best Ever Pads.
The barrel race had $750 in added money. Each 4D Division Winner received a Hy O Silver Buckle, 2nd place received a Jody Reese Picture Frame, 3rd & 4th place received a choice of either a Steer Gear or Across the Prairie Gift Certificate. In addition to our Open 4D Barrel Race we had a Pee Wee Barrel Race with the fastest time receiving a Hy O Silver Buckle and all the other contestants receiving goodie bags. The winner of the 8 & Under Pee Wee Barrel Race was Cash LeNeave with a time of 19.483.
This year we were able to give out $3,000 in scholarships. Congragulations to this year’s recipient’s Blair Brown, Brody Sans, Kourtnee Barnes, Mikayla Witmer, Kali Vollin, and Kara Kester. We have given away over $16,000 in scholarship money over the years and hope to be able to continue the tradition. See you all next year!
