Recipes by Erica Krantz I’ve always loved to cook! Trying different meals, either from magazine clippings or friend’s family recipes, my motto is “I’ll always cook it once, if you don’t like it, I’m sure my dogs will!” My mother taught me the basics of cooking, the rest I’ve picked up from watching a million cooking shows and reading tons of cookbooks. But what I love the most is seeing the look on my friends’ faces when I hand them their plate and they take that first bite! |
This month’s recipe comes from states away, In Colbert Washington. Leslie Brown has made this tasteful, fresh Italian dish for her family for many years. She has passed this dish down to one of her daughters Mallory, who lives in Texas and makes this for many of those hungry college boys. “Not one complaint!” she says. So give it a try and impress your family, friends, or just make it all for yourself!
Brown Family Lasagna Special
Ingredients
1 pound hamburger
6 ounces sweet Italian sausage
3/4 cups chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
Cook these ingredients until brown and drain the fat.
Ingredients
1 can (1 lb) tomato sauce
1 can (15 oz) stewed tomatoes
2 tablespoons parsley flakes
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon basil
Add these ingredients and heat to a boil. Lower heat to a simmer and cook, simmering for 1 hour. Heat the oven to 350 degrees.
Ingredients
3 cups Ricotta cheese
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon parsley flakes
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons oregano
Mix these ingredients together and save.
Ingredients
1 package (8oz) Lasagna noodles
1 pound Mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
Directions
Cook noodles as directed on package. Reserve 1/2 cup of meat sauce for the top. In a 13×9 pan, layer 1/4 noodles, 1/4 sauce, 1/4 ricotta, and 1/4 mozzarella. Repeat 3 times. Spread the reserved meat sauce on top. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese. At this point, you can refrigerate until baking if needed.
Bake uncovered for 45 minutes (add 15 minutes if refrigerated). For easier cutting, let it stand for 15 minutes after removing from the oven.
