BULLHEAD CITY, AZ – The 17th Annual Lucky 777 was held December 2, 3, and 4, 2016 at the Mojave Crossing Equestrian and Event Center in Bullhead City, Arizona. The event is right across the river from the host hotel, the Avi Resort and Casino. This year’s event was no different than the 16 Lucky 777 ropings held in the past.
The Open Roping was the second time this category had been offered. Like last year the Open was well received. Eighty-three teams competed for the money. First in the average went to the team of Manny Egusquiza and Kinney Dale Harrell with a total time of 24.03 seconds, sharing $12,888. Second in the average paid $9,660 and that went to Tyler Waters and Jade Corkill with a time of 24.9 seconds.
The next Friday night event was the #13 Handicap. This warm-up roping was progressive after one for $100 a roper. This roping went off without a hitch. 109 teams entered up to rope. First in the average went to Truman Magnus and Laramie Allen with a time of 21.11 seconds and they collected $5,800 and Skyline Silversmith buckles. Second in the average were Andy Holcomb and Wyatt Hansen, whose time totaled 21.68 seconds.
The roping really got down to business on Sat., Dec. 3 with the #15. This roping was three full rounds and 20 teams to the short round at $500 per roper. This year’s #15 had a total of 237 teams competing for a substantial cash prize. First in the average were Clark Adcock and Dustin Egusquiza winning $40,000 with a time of 28.11 seconds, along with a Circle Y saddle for each roper. Second in the average went to Brenten Hall and Jake Cooper Clay, collecting $28,750 and Gist trophy buckles.
Following the #15 was the Jim Hamilton Memorial #10 Century. This roping is in honor of our good friend Jim Hamilton. Over the years, Jim helped many different producers with his handling of the front end of the arena. Jim was also an accomplished roper in his younger days. This year the Century was $250 per roper, each team getting three full rounds with 20 teams to the short go. Seventy-seven teams were ready to go Saturday evening. First in the average were Jason Williams and Jerry Stutts with a time of 34.24 seconds, collecting $10,460 along with the Gist trophy buckles.
Sunday morning, Dec. 4, a #11 was on the schedule. This event would be three full rounds for each team and 20 teams to the short round. The #11 attracted 133 teams. First in the average were Brody Gill and Chance Ruffoni with a time of 33.95 seconds. They shared $30,060 and each took home a Circle Y saddle. Second went to Jeremy Ross and Brendan Fisk, whose time was 35.1 seconds and they won $20,950 along with the Gist trophy buckles.
This was the 17th Annual Lucky 777, and they have all been a success because of the support of the ropers. This year was no different. While it is often unnoticed, Phillip Murrah doing the flagging there is always great officiating. Reed Flake doubles as the announcer and also supplies the cattle. Three hundred head were on the grounds to ensure that every team had a fair chance to compete. Vicky and Kelsi Mounyo along with Amy Flake did a great job handling the sign-ups getting everyone entered. A thank you to the Avi Resort and Casino for allowing the roping to be held at the Mojave Crossing Equestrian and Event Center.
We look forward to seeing you next year at the 18th Annual Lucky 777 in Bullhead City, Arizona.
