CERES, CALIF. – WPRA rookie Rachel Dice drove home to Livermore, Calif., with $8,933 and the 1D Average Championship from the $100,000-added West Coast Barrel Racing Finals—dubbed “The Richest Race in the West” held at Diamond Bar Arena in Ceres, Calif.
“I love it there,” said Dice, 25. “They have such a great setup for us. There was enough room for all of us, and they had 505 runs each day. They’re super nice. Shane Parsons, who owns the arena, is super accommodating. They have great food. The ground is always great, and my mare runs super good there. Jaime (Hinton) did a great job with all the prizes and getting so many vendors in there. They ran 45 runs an hour, which is so fast. They ran three tractors and did a big drag every 35. They really took care of us.”
Dice and her 7-year-old reining reject Tivitosatthegogobar (“Katie”) placed seventh in the first race on Saturday with a 17.463 on the WPRA Standard Pattern in the sandy loam outdoor pen.
“My first run on Saturday could have been better,” said Dice. “We went around the first barrel and tipped it. I actually reached over and pushed it back up, so that cost us a little bit of time.”
They got faster on Sunday with a 17.316 that placed fourth.
“Sunday we got a little stuck around the barrels,” she explained. “We were right before a big drag, so it was a little deeper, but we still ran faster than Saturday.”
On Monday, the draw order was determined by everyone’s average on two runs with the fastest on two running at the very end.
Dice and Katie scorched a 16.981.
“It was the run of a lifetime!” she exclaimed. “She’s always run super-good in that pen. She just worked her little butt off. Every barrel was pretty much flawless. I was so happy. I always nit-pick myself on what I could do better, but I was so happy after that run.”
Dice, an office manager at a geotechnical consulting firm, grew up going to junior and high school rodeos. She picked up reining when she started competing in rodeo queen’s cont
“I showed NRHA in their West Coast affiliate,” she explained. “It started when I was doing some rodeo queen stuff. I bought a reiner for that and really liked it. I started taking some lessons. I became a way better rider, and when I went back to barrel racing, it really improved my times.”
She picked up Katie as a 4-year-old from Michelle Roye, who was giving her reining lessons at the time.
“My old reining trainer said I have this 4-year-old that’s not going to make a reiner; she’d probably made a good kid’s gymkhana horse; you could probably sell her for a couple of grand,” she laughed.
“She sold her to me for really cheap. I really liked her personality. We just did little jackpots and stuff, and all of a sudden she was running 1D. I was like kid’s gymkhana horse, yeah right!”
Bred by Dee Braught of Cottonwood, Calif., Katie is by Tivitos Sugar Bar out of Red Oak Doll, by Flips Red Oak. Her top and bottom is loaded with Doc Bar breeding and she traces back to Colonel Flip and Go Man Go through her female line.
This spring Dice bought her WPRA permit. Their first rodeo was the Chowchilla Stampede in Oakdale, Calif., the first weekend of April, and they had won enough money to buy her card in May.
Then her boss, a roper, gave her the greatest of gifts.
“He said, ‘Merry Christmas. Take July off and go rodeo.’ So, I went and went all out,” she laughed. “Everyone at work has been so supportive. Even the ones that don’t rope are checking the standings to see how I’m doing.”
Dice also wanted to thank her parents and her husband John.
“They have been super supportive. When I broke down outside of Salt Lake after my run at Cheyenne, my dad and my husband drove out with the backup truck to pick me so I would make it to Salinas on time. My family, my friends, my work have all been so supportive. I wouldn’t be able to do this without them.”
