A year ago at this time Cody Teel wasn’t at the Ram Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo, earning paychecks and being presented buckles. He was sitting home in Kountze, Texas, “under doctors’ orders to do nothing,” while recovering from a ruptured small intestine.
“It was pretty boring,” Teel said. “They wouldn’t even let me lift anything until the middle of January, so I just kind of stayed around the house watching old NFR tapes.”
This January is better. This January, Teel is getting to live out the most vivid day dreams he might have imagined in his couch riding days of a winter ago.
Teel placed in all three rounds at the Extraco Events Center Jan. 6-7 – he was the only bull rider to have three qualified rides – and easily won the average title with 239 points to earn $4,139.
When he closed out his weekend with an 87-point ride good enough to share second place in Round 3, Teel was also assured of the year-end title in bull riding and the Texas Circuit’s overall Rookie of the Year Award.
And that brings us back to the wretched way Teel started his 2011 season… and what might have been.
Teel bought his card in September 2010, just three months after his 18th birthday, and was looking forward to a season-long battle with friend and fellow Texan Chandler Bownds for the PRCA Resistol Bull Riding Rookie of the Year Award.
But while competing in a college rodeo for Sam Houston State in November 2010, Teel was struck in the stomach by the head of the bull he was riding, suffering a ruptured Duodenum – the first section of his small intestine.
Teel required two surgeries, lost 18 pounds, and was sidelined for three months; he was off form for another month after that.
“At the point when I got hurt, I’d already won two (PRCA) rodeos and I was riding the way I wanted to,” Teel said. “It all came to a standstill real quick. You can let it bother you or you can let it motivate you. What happened happened. There’s no changing that.
“A lot of my buddies said, ‘If you had those lost months back you would have made the National Finals Rodeo,’ but if I had ridden well in August I might still have made it. You can ‘what if’ things to death. At the end of the year, I was happy with how it went. I learned a lot and had some good experiences. It’s all in God’s plan.”
Even with that interruption to his season, Teel managed to win at least a share of six regular-season PRCA rodeos, won the College National Finals Rodeo, finished second to Bownds in the rookie race and was 20th in the world standings.
He added a bit of cachet to his season by winning the All American ProRodeo Finals in Waco last October, also in the Extraco Events Center.
“It is something to build on,” Teel said. “I’m pumped and ready to go.”
Which is a good deal more than he could say last January.
Teel was one of four contestants to sweep both the Ram TCFR and Texas Circuit Year-End championships, being joined by nine-time World Champion All-Around Cowboy Trevor Brazile, three-time World Champion Bareback Rider Will Lowe and reigning World Champion Tie-Down Roper Tuf Cooper.
Brazile earned checks in all three roping events, a total of $4,478, to win the all-around in Waco and add to his $25,000 lead in the regular-season standings he held over Caleb Smidt at the start of the week.
Lowe shared the Round 3 bareback riding win with Chris Harris to finish with 249 points, five ahead of Wes Stevenson, who won Rounds 1 and 2.
Cooper placed in all three rounds of the tie-down roping – going 8.7, 8.0 and 7.8 – to edge his eldest brother, Clint Cooper, by two-tenths of a second, 24.5 to 24.7.
The other champions in Waco were steer wrestler Logan Gledhill (14.5 seconds on three head), team ropers Luke Brown and Martin Lucero (24.5 seconds on three head), saddle bronc rider Jacobs Crawley (235 points on three head), steer roper Kim Ziegelgruber (36.9 seconds on three head) and barrel racer Shelley Morgan (48.80 seconds on three runs).
