RED BLUFF, CALIF. – Records were broken at the 2022 Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale held January 25-29. Who would expect a dog to sell for $45,000 or a gelding for $59,000, or a bull to sell for $30,000? Usually there is rain, and occasionally snow during the Red Bluff Bull Sale but this year there were no cars stuck in the parking lot, since we had sunshine each day of the sale.
The 44th annual Stock Dog sale saw 17 dogs average $9,559, with high selling dog Skittles, a red and white Border Collie consigned by Jeff Clausen, Melba, Idaho to Neal Sillar, Penn Valley, for $45,000. Sillar also purchased Ruby from Jaime Gonzalez for $11,000. Bruce was high scoring with 251 points, a black and white male from Hannah Cash, Alturas, Calif., selling for $10,500 to Tom Atwood, Red Bluff. Tyler Martinez from Red Bluff purchased Lazy D Jimbo, a black and white male from Paige Winebarger, Prineville, Oregon for $8,000. Roger Nicholson, Fort Klamath, Oregon rancher purchased SV Pongo, from Bruce Svedin, Baker City, Oregon. This year dogs went to Malta, Montana; Linden, Utah; Jackson, Wyoming; and Sulphur Springs, Texas.
A total of 45 geldings averaged $22,850 and ten 2-year-olds averaged $10,650. Combined the 55 horses averaged $20,631.82.
The highlight of the sale was Spencer and Whitney Mitchell’s, FD Star Pep. When the gavel dropped, Clint and Gail Moffitt of Biggs, Calif. paid $59,000 for the 12-year old bay gelding.
The Champion Conformation, and second place stockhorse was a sorrel from Chet and Angela Vogt, Elk Creek, Calif. that sold for $47,000 to Tammy Burgin, Galt, Calif. The Craig Owens Ideal Ranch Horse, Reserve Champion Conformation, a brown Quarter Horse consigned by Brian and MaryKate Huntsberger, Paso Robles, Calif., sold to Lazy JT Land & Cattle, Paso Robles for $35,000.
