It’s hard to say who was happier at the Reno Rodeo, steer wrestler Todd Suhn or his wife Wendy.
Suhn, from Hermosa, S.D., had won the Reno Rodeo in 2005 and 2007 and qualified for this year’s finals in the top spot with a total time of 8.2 seconds on two head. He stopped the clock in five seconds in the finals to beat Blake Knowles from Heppner, Ore., by three-tenths of a seconds. And he did that all with wife Wendy, son Slate and daughter Zoey in the stands. And the first thing out of Wendy Suhn’s mouth was “Daddy got a new pair of spurs.”
Not only did he win the spurs, he also earned checks totaling $10,214. Prior to the Reno Rodeo, Suhn was in fourth place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings. The money he won here will move him up at least one position and give him momentum going into the important Fourth-of-July rodeo run known as “Cowboy Christmas”.
Jhett Johnson from Casper, Wyo., and Turtle Powell from Stephenville, Texas, came into the finals in the lead in the team roping. They not only maintained their lead, but also won the final round and were the big money winners of all the cowboys. With Powell heading and Johnson, heeling, they had a total time of 16.2 seconds to win $11,730 each.
Johnson’s wife and three sons were on hand to see the win. “I told Jhett I just wanted to go to a big rodeo and see him win,” Jenny Johnson said. “We are all here with him and for him. It’s just amazing.”
The high money winner at the rodeo in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel race was Robyn Herring from Huntington, Texas, had three runs totaling 51.19 seconds to win $11,585. She rode her palomino horse she calls Happy to the win. The duo is headed to Greeley, Colo., Pres-cott, Ariz., and then some rodeos in Utah. They are currently 13th in the world standings. The money won here will make a significant improvement in their position and hopefully get them to their first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
Plans are already underway for the 2012 Reno Rodeo.
