LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -– The first Southwest ACTRA Championships were held in Las Vegas at Horsemen’s Park Sept. 26-28. This roping was put together to help members qualify for the National Finals in Reno. It also gave members who couldn’t make the long trip to Reno a quality ACTRA roping closer to home. The event was a total success and the National Board feels great about the future of the Southwest Championships in Las Vegas.
Mother Nature showed up Friday night with some rain, crazy wind and lightning, after the roping, thank goodness. The next two days were absolutely perfect roping weather.
The awards were totally awesome. The high money winners of each roping on Saturday and Sunday won Cactus Champion saddles. We want to thank Cactus Saddlery for the great job they did on these saddles. The average winners won specially designed buckles from Skyline Silversmiths. We want to thank Ryan Fowler and Skyline for the buckles.
Professional’s Choice, Wrangler, Fast Back Ropes and Cactus Ropes fill out the rest of the prizeline – an unbelievable payback to the members of 146%.
The roping ran as smoothly as one could wish, especially for a first time event. National Directors Bob Blair, Steve Kevorkian, Garry Rogers, Ty Rogers, Shelley Winn and Brian Roundy made sure everything went well.
Heidi Fettic, ACTRA National Secretary, was assisted by Wendy Stark, Vicki Benedict and Shelly Winn with the secretary duties. A special thanks for handling the high team and award ceremonies. Thanks to Lee Legasey of Perfect Timing for taking care of the barrier and flagging duties, and Habib Cattle Company for some great steers.
The Horsemen’s Park crew, from the office to the grounds-keepers, did a great job. We would also like to thank Sam’s Town for being the host hotel – what a great place to stay.
