PASO ROBLES, CALIF. – Two California Custom Trailer & Powersports Honda Rancher quads, 14 Scott Thomas saddles, 18 Skyline Vaquero buckles and a host of other great prizes were awarded September 27 – October 1 at the California ACTRA Chapter Finals at the Paso Robles Event Center.
Other awards included RopeSmart dally wraps, Professional’s Choice storm blankets, hay bags and rope bags, Skyline Silversmiths knives and headstalls, Wrangler gift cards, Yeti tumblers, Skyline stirrups with silver and Cactus/FastBack rope sponsorships.
The $20,000 added money also included $2,000 added money in the Open, donated by Bradley Builders.
Our week in Paso Robles at the California Custom Trailers and Powersports California American Cowboys Team Roping Association’s State Finals was incredible! With close to 2,500 teams, and ropers from all over the state, we were able to payback 96% of fees in cash and prizes to our members. We prepare and plan all year to be able to produce this roping and we are proud to offer such a quality event to the ropers of California.
Marcey Chaves and Jeff Fontes were the champions of the Super 7 and were awarded the Cal Custom Quads. Another huge winner was Kelton Martinez, who took home championship saddles in the #5.5 and the #4 ropings, the Cactus/Fastback rope sponsorship and just under $10,000! High money winner of the Finals was Colton White, who took home $11,625 and Jeff Fontes was close behind pocketing $10,205 in addition to that Honda quad. We love getting to award this kind of big money and prizes to our members.
One of our favorite stories of the week happened during the awards presentation for the Jim Hanner Century Roping. After Ed Cohn and Spencer Mitchell received their championship saddles, JW Brewen and Ronnye Garcia came up to receive their reserve champion buckles. Ronnye immediately handed his buckle to Billie Hanner (Jim’s wife). Billie was deeply touched and many tears were shed. Billie will cherish the buckle and it was a moment that meant so much for a man who was such a big part of ACTRA. We thank Jim’s family and friends for sponsoring all of the awards for a roping that will continue to be named in his honor.
With a roping this size, the logistics of moving everyone in and out can be a challenge. One major improvement came with the decision to leave our RV and stall reservations to the team at EZ Stall. We were extremely impressed with them and know everyone appreciated the organization to the stall and RV process that their app provided.
Our week in Paso was filled with lots of roping as well as time to stop and visit with old friends. Our banquet started with a wine tasting sponsored by the Paso Robles Events Center. We loved how it brought members together for some fun and reminiscing while we watched the short round of the Super 7 Roping.
The live and silent auction at our banquet raised $5,900 for our Catastrophe Fund. Being able to help when a member is in need is something that we’re grateful to be able to do. We also handed out $50,000 in awards to our year-end winners and had some fun on the dance floor.
The dummy ropers were out in full force on Saturday morning. The kids are tough and work hard for their buckles.Congratulations to Chet Mielke, Ryle Christensen, Waylon Babshoff, and Ryder Holliday for winning new Skyline buckles.
Curtis Jensen with Bullseye Imaging was onsite capturing memories for us all week. If you missed seeing your pictures in Paso, they are posted on Curtis’ website and can still be purchased: bullseyeimaging.zenfolio.com
Paso Robles Events Center maintains an immaculate facility and we are fortunate that they allow us to produce our Finals there. Their staff makes us feel so welcome. We enjoyed the great vendors for our shopping pleasure and thank all of our members for doing such a good job of respecting the staff and facility.
This event isn’t possible without a team working hard behind the scenes. Our secretaries, announcers and flaggers are the best in the business. We thank them for their tireless efforts. The cattle were exceptional and we thank Steve and Sarah Simons with S Bar J Cattle and their crew for giving everyone a fair chance to compete all week. The directors of this association are volunteers and work tirelessly to make everything run smoothly. They showed up early, labeled stall and RV spots, sponsored awards, helped with parking, worked in the arena ALL week, manned the ACTRA booth, as well as many other tasks. This organization wouldn’t run without them and we owe them all a huge nod of appreciation!
Last, but certainly not least, we would like to thank the team ropers in California for continuing to support this non-profit association. We have great pride in continuing the western way of life and offering the place “Where Families Come to Rope!”
