Since the holidays are right around the corner, I decided to share with you my great grandma’s apple pie recipe. My mother has made this many times and it is always a must have at all the holiday dinners. Try it out this Thanksgiving and just see what a hit it is! I know every time my mother bakes up a homemade apple pie it doesn’t last too long in the Krantz household. So take a chance and be your own Betty Crocker.
Great Grandma’s Sweet Apple Pie
– Crust
4 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
11/2 cups shortening
3/4 cup cold water
– Directions
Take the shortening, flour and salt – cut until pea-size pieces form. Add the cold water, mix and little – don’t overwork the dough. On floured surface, roll out dough for a top and bottom crust.
– Pie Filling
8 – 9 apples
11/2 – 2 cups sugar (depending on how sweet the apples are, and how sweet you like your pie)
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 Tbsp. brandy or rum
1 Tbsp. cinnamon
– Directions
Slice apples, add sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, brandy or rum. Mix together. Put into the bottom of pie crust. Add a few slices of butter on top of apples. Put top crust on filling and cut four slits in crust for ventilation. Sprinkle some sugar on top of the pie. Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour.
