By Spring Krogue, Classic Barrel Racing
Saturday, October 17th was the 3rd annual Grand National Barrel Racing Jackpot at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. This year we had 261 competitors in the Open 4D and 40 competitors in the Youth 4D. New for 2015 we had $2,000 added to the Open thanks to Ford Lincoln Fairfield. The youth had $300 added thanks to Kerry Mullins Properties. We paid out more than $16,500 for the one day barrel race as well as all 1st place D winners were awarded beautiful Dale Chavez Buckles and the 2nd place D winners were awarded custom belts by JACO Brands in the OPEN and YOUTH!
The morning started early with time only runs beginning at 5:30am! The competitors were up and ready for an awesome day of racing which began at 8am. Steve Smart was our announcer and kept the racers running and the crowd entertained. The thrill and excitement of running at the famous Cow Palace arena wasn’t lost on anyone….seasoned competitors were excited about the opportunity to compete. Every person that entered the Cow Palace arena to make their run was dressed to impress and excited about the race!
There were many emotional ups and downs with lots of excitement, but late in the day in the mid 240’s draw Charleen Ornellas set the fast time. Congratulations to Charleen Ornellas and DTF Rose Ta Fame on being crowed the 2015 1D Champion! Charleen stated, “I’m speechless. Thank you so much Spring Krogue for putting together a Top Notch race with incredible ground … at the Cow Palace!!!! Proud to jockey such an amazing horse.”
Deborah Damonte placed 6th in the 4D winning $207.00 on Talley Ho and when asked about her experience she had this to say, “Wow Spring Krogue! You and your team did it again! What a fun, fabulous, flawless, did I say fun, event. I’m still high from the energy and glitz of the whole thing. Just a big ole thank you!”
The Short Go consisted of the top times from the Open and Youth and was sponsored by Ford Lincoln Fairfield, JACO Brands and Oxy-Gen. Under the lights of the Cow Palace and the excitement of the pre-rodeo event the top competitors came back to compete in the Short Go. The winner of the Short Go was Kathy Petska riding Dinero Made Me Famous!
Rena Elkins who placed 11th in the 2D stated, “The Cow Palace is a special place to many of us competitors-myself included. Thank you so much for the quick responses, up to date race info on facebook, and a well-run race. Your efforts and the efforts of the arena crew.”
New for the 2015 year were the PeeWee riders, we had 12 little ones that were 8 and under who got to have their chance to ride in the infamous Cow Palace Arena. All of the competitors received a Classic Equine “My First Grooming Tote” as well as a Cow Palace Ribbon…which I am sure will be treasured for years to come. The PeeWee Race was sponsored by Classic Equine and Sugarland Horse Park.
The success of this event was due to the hard work by so many wonderful friends and family members. Classic Barrel Racing is a proud producer of West Coast Barrel Racing events and are thrilled that we were able to co-sanction this race with WPRA, ACBRA and Run2Win. The work of everyone involved made this year’s race awesome. We are so very thankful to every volunteer and appreciate the hard work and dedication by so many wonderful people. Jason Krogue, my dear husband, worked tirelessly with me before, during and after the race. He worked as our arena director and made sure the barrels were set and the ground was consistent for each and every contestant. I want to personally thank my family and friends that helped mail parking passes, check in contestants, set barrels, write times, assist with prizes and help watch Corbin. We could not have pulled off such a smooth race without each and every one of you, I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
We hope to make 2016 even bigger and better!
