Ropers from across the nation competed for more than $1.1 million in cash and prizes. The 2024 edition centered around the #11.5, #10.5, #9.5 and #8.5 National Finales and included two VIP Championship divisions for ropers 21 and over, Legends Championships for ropers 60 and over and 50 and over, an All-Girl, Mixed, Open, and a #8.5 Ram Truck Roping. They roped four steers in 40.92 seconds to maximize the big pay day. Combined, the #8.5 VIP and #10.5 VIP Championships boasted $20,000 added and are a big draw for NTR VIP members. Rain caused several schedule changes throughout the week. The #7.5 Championships were moved to Sunday, March 17, extending the Finals by one additional day. Ten custom Scott Thomas Saddles were awarded in the final division of the week along with $35,000 in cash. Herren was back again topping the #7.5 with Conrad Rivera, San Tan Valley, Arizona, making it an epic week for the South Dakotan. (March 9, 2024) – As the intense action came to a close inside Globe Life Field at The American Rodeo, owned by Teton Ridge on Saturday, March 9, barrel racer Brandon Cullins swept the competition in the Contender field – earning the biggest single-day payout of his career. Hailing from Dublin, TX, Cullins is no stranger to the largest stage in western sports, having made his way into the qualifying field for the fifth time. As the first male winner of the barrel racing discipline at the Crown Jewel of Rodeo, the well-known futurity derby trainer was paired with equine athlete “MJ Segers Fast Lane.” The duo have been competing together since 2022 and already earned more than $300,000. Celebrating its 11th year, The American Rodeo features competitors in all eight traditional rodeo disciplines: barrel racing, breakaway roping, steer wrestling, team roping (heading and healing), tie down roping, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding. APRIL 2024 ROPERS SPORTS NEWS PAGE 3 EXPERIENCE THE SPEED OF LITE Learn More Want to catch at the Speed of Lite? With one swing of the Powerline4 Lite, you’ll understand why it’s the #1 choice of World Champions. Its four-strand construction, made of twisted nylon and polyester filament, winds around a CoreTech™ nylon core. This increases the rope’s body and widens the loop, allowing you to throw with more accuracy and control. classicrope.com Quinn Kesler Showed That Good Cowboys Still Exist “Rope Like Quinn” April 24, 1993 - February 26, 2024 HOLDEN, UTAH – Quinn Baker Kesler, 30, was called home on February 26, 2024, in Holden, Utah. While we miss him dearly, we are comforted knowing he is serving on the other side. Quinn was born April 24, 1993, in Salt Lake City, UT, the fifth of Greg and Allyson Kesler’s six children. His family soon moved to Holden where Quinn spent the remainder of his life doing what he loved: working outdoors on the family ranch, roping, raising horses, and establishing lasting relationships with people of all ages and walks of life. Quinn always had a rope in his hand from the time he was a small child. He roped anything and everything in sight, even his foot during a particularly boring sacrament meeting. It didn’t take long for him to establish himself as a skilled roper, and he entered his first championship at the age of nine. His first big roping win came during the National Finals Rodeo in 2015. Quinn experienced a unique upbringing where he earned his education on the back of a horse. During his high school years, he was a three-time Utah high school state champion in team roping in 2009-11 and calf roping champion in 2011. He also was a four-time qualifier for the National High School Finals Rodeo. He was a Seminary graduate, an Eagle Scout, and served an honorable mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Omaha, Nebraska. After his return, Quinn made the best catch of his life when he married Jessie Rae Hodson on August 8, 2015, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. The couple met during high school rodeo and continued the shared hobby throughout their marriage. They were overjoyed when their daughter, Quincy Rae, joined their family on July 13, 2021. Quincy was the highlight of Quinn’s life, and he was 100 percent invested from day one. He eagerly volunteered to change diapers or arrange ponytails, and the duo quickly became inseparable. “Pretty girl,” as he called Quincy, was Quinn Kesler heeled for TJ McCauley to win the reserve championship at the 2011 Bob Feist Invitational (BFI) in Reno. The team had switched ends from 2010 where they ended up seventh in the average. In 2011, they won $95,000 in cash plus awards. – Kirt Steinke Photo a constant at his side, and he rarely left her behind whether he was just going somewhere on the ranch or to a roping or rodeo. His new role as a father was an influential turning point in his life, and he never experienced greater joy or success than when he was with Quincy and Jessie. Quinn served as a father figure, mentor, and friend to many. Just as he used to attract a crowd when he was roping (whether steers or just dummies), Quinn had the innate ability to draw people in. That was the only time he ever threw his rope wide: to gather as many people as he could. While he was so kind and made everyone feel welcome, he also had a personal touch that made you feel like you were his favorite. He established many one-onone relationships that will be cherished by anyone privileged to know him. Among his family, he earned the title of “favorite uncle” from his adoring nieces See QUINN KESLER On Page 5

The 66 consignments that ran through the ring at the 10th annual sale drew spectators and buyers from all over the nation and brought $2.66 million in total sales. With 52 horses sold, the overall sale average was $51,154 and the top 10 average was $94,800. Early in the sale, auctioneer Steve Friskup dropped the gavel to the tune of $180,000 at Lot 8 on the 6-year-old red roan gelding Rusty Peptoboosmal. Consigned by Brooke and Rodey Wilson, Wilson Cattle Company, of Canyon, Texas, “Twizzler” marks their third consecutive high seller in as many years. Their first-ever high seller was in 2022 when they sold Sportin Roscoe (“South Point”) for $200,000, and in 2023 when they sold TRR Kadabra Kat (“Honkey Tonk”) for $160,000. “It’s nerve-racking,” said Brooke. “You don’t really know what’s going to happen, or who is going to show up, or if there’s something better that they’re waiting on. You just have to bring a good horse and see what happens. “Twizzler is the winningest horse we’ve ever had,” continued Brooke, who won the #10.5 Riata Buckle heading on the horse in 2022 for $62,000. Twizzler was then on the winning team of the exact roping in 2023, this time on the heel side with a #5 roper. “It doesn’t matter who’s riding him.” Twizzler was purchased by Javier Rodriguez, of Las Vegas, Nevada, who also purchased Honkey Tonk in 2023. “He actually came out to ride him,” Brooke said. “I went back and watched his videos over and over and that horse was unbelievable for him. He’s a #3 and that horse made him look like a #6. It was unreal. I’m just so glad he’s going to someone that’s going to enjoy him.” Hooks Flintrock, Lot 24, followed as the second-high seller at $115,000 and was purchased by Roberto Brembilla of Scottsdale, Arizona. “Jube Jube,” a 2016 chestnut gelding, was consigned by Kale and Tatum Peterson, Peterson Performance Horses, of Wittmann, Arizona, and Buck Lake, Alberta, Canada. Rounding out the top three high sellers was Lot 30, Gin N Guns Dont Mix, who sold for $110,000. Consigned by Chad and Paje Turner, Turner Performance Horses, of Congress, Arizona, and East Helena, Montana, the 2018 palomino gelding was purchased by James Hunter, of Eagle, Idaho. “Townes” is by the NRHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion Gunners Tinseltown and out of a daughter of Nu Chex To Cash and is eligible for APHA Chrome Cash. Superior Productions broadcast the event live bringing the sale to additional spectators and potential buyers worldwide. Renowned auctioneer, Steve Friskup, Muleshoe, Texas, was joined on the auction block by longtime team roping announcers Ferron Lucero, Stephenville, Texas, and Doug VanDyken, Bozeman, Montana, along with sale clerk Katie Yost, Billings, Montana. From Page 3 and nephews and “platinum child” from his siblings. Quinn was sarcastic, a lot of fun, and a joy to be around. He enjoyed chess, Mountain Dew, and had a secret talent for rapping. On any adventure, he had to be the driver and the DJ, often dropping a beat to one of his favorite artists, Lil Wayne. He loved all genres and often when he needed a moment to regroup, he could be found in his truck listening to music. Hardworking and determined, Quinn was always learning. He sought every opportunity to grow his skills and improve things around him. There is no way to count the number of quality horses he raised, trained, and sold as he helped build Double Dollar Livestock from the ground up. Quinn was a three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier – twice as a heeler (2016, 2018) and once as a header (2021). He is one of only 10 cowboys to ever qualify for both heading and heeling. He was also named the 2015 PRCA Resistol Rookie of the Year. While competing in the Wilderness Circuit, Quinn qualified for the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in 2016 and 2019 as a heeler and 2020 and 2021 as a header. He also qualified for the NFR Open powered by RAM as a header in 2022. Despite all his professional achievements, the real legacy Quinn leaves the rodeo arena is that good cowboys still exist. In any situation, Quinn was always caring, generous, and Christlike. He had a strong love for the Savior and continued to be a great missionary long after his official service ended. He was constantly sharing his testimony of the gospel, more from his actions than his words. If we could all learn to rope, and live, like Quinn, the world would be a better place. Quinn is survived by his eternal companion, Jessie, and their daughter, Quincy. He is also survived by his parents, Greg and Deb Kesler, Holden, and Allyson Baker, Lehi; siblings Camille (Doyle) Brewer, Holden; Landon (Tawnya) Kesler, Holden; Nicole (Tyree) Pulham, Fairfield; Lindsay (Matt) Albrecht, Minersville; and Hailey Kesler, Fairfield. Quinn will also be remembered and loved by his many relatives, friends, fans, and the various communities on which he had such an impact. A celebration of life took place March 1 at the Millard County Fairgrounds in Delta, UT. Under the direction of Olpin Stevens Mortuary, funeral services were held March 2, at the Fillmore LDS Stake Center, Fillmore, UT. Internment was at the West Weber Cemetery. Draw..........3 for $25 – ANNUAL DON JONES MEMORIAL ROPING – Doug Pharr Victorious At M.M. Fisher Jr. Memorial Steer Roping Courtesy ProRodeo.Com Doug Pharr is no stranger to success as a rodeo competitor. The Mt. Calm, Texas, resident qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2000, 2005, 2006 and 2008, as a tie-down roper, placing in 12 rounds and finishing among the PRCA’s best in the event. But even Pharr struggled to comprehend what transpired at the M.M. Fisher, Jr. Memorial Steer Roping in Andrews, Texas March 9-10. “It was unexpected for me to win this roping,” Pharr said with a laugh. “It’s one of the biggest steer ropings of the year and certainly the prestige and the caliber of everyone there, it was very exciting for me to win this roping. I’m still in disbelief.” During his runs at the event, Pharr kept a steady pace, catching all four steers he ran at. While his time of 11.8 seconds in the second round was the only effort that cracked the top eight to earn him round money, his aggregate time of 54.5 seconds was good enough to secure the title, placing him one second ahead of John E. Bland. Coupled with his round money, Pharr earned $6,616 for the weekend. That total alone gives him the most money earned in a season since 2012, when he finished at just more than $7,100. Pharr stepped away from being a full-time PRCA competitor around 2009 to focus on work outside of rodeo and his family. He dabbled in tie-down roping events on occasion just to stay connected or an excuse to get out of town for a few days. After years of chasing and tying calves, Pharr decided to shift his focus and try something new, opting to step into the world of steer roping on a limited basis. He averages about one competition a month, mainly in Texas, while training at home. Being competitive has always been the desire for Pharr. While he trained his own horse, Pharr has been fortunate to use Jamie Long’s horse, Tongue, over the last year as his personal mount recovers from an injury. While it’s certainly been fun to compete, Pharr has been waiting a long time for everything to come together. And, after a lot of hard work, he’s grateful – and a little shocked – that it finally happened. “I’ve probably been here maybe four times. I haven’t ever done very good at this roping – and I haven’t really won a ton,” Pharr said. “I’ve probably been steer roping now for four or five years at this level. I’ve had some very limited success in my view and then suddenly it all came together at a really good roping like this. I’m at a loss for words.” Average: 1. Doug Pharr, 54.5 seconds on four head, $5,967; 2. John E. Bland, 55.5, $5,189; 3. Blake Deckard, 56.5, $4,410; 4. Thomas Smith, 61.2, $3,632; 5. Zac Parrington, 62.1, $2,854; 6. Tanner Duwe, 62.6, $2,076; 7. Keith Hudson, 70.4, $1,297; 8. Trent Sorey, 37.5 on three head, $519.

One of the unique things about the Speed Trainer is it can be used in so many ways and positions. Sometimes I put my son on the Speed Trainer and move the dummy right under its neck with the butt as close to the Speed Trainer as I can get it. I then tell him to set a “gate” with his loop and have it stand up without going under the legs. Then, I’ll ask him to rope in the same position but have the bottom strand of his loop come through under the legs. Then, I’ll tell him I want the right leg roped and only a trap in front of the left leg. You’re probably wondering why I would ask for three different loops on one cow. I want him to understand what his hand does and how to place the rope under the cow and have complete control of his top and bottom strand. If you’ve ever watched my son heel, he has the ability to engage his horse with his left hand and throw his rope at the same time. This can only be done if you’re close to the cow and we practice this shot on the Speed Trainer. Why did I teach him to heel this way when he was young? Because I think it’s much more complex and complicated to be able to stop your horse and throw your rope at the same time. This is my opinion and not all pro heelers teach this and that’s okay. But when Gabe was 10 or 11, I wanted him to have as much time as possible to get his dally. Being able to heel the steer close allows more time for the dally. Using the Speed Trainer, we work on heeling the steer from all different positions. I set the dummy off to the right like when a heeler gets trapped inside where he has to practice climbing over his horse, leaning to the right and trying to set his rope in front of the legs with the steer three or four feet to the right. As a heeler, you’re not always going to get your ideal position. What enables great ropers to win so much is being able to create shots when they do not get their ideal position. I’m not a fan of roping the heading dummy or sawhorse on the ground. Did I learn that way? Yes. But the math and angles learned help create bad habits on the ground because you use your feet and body to throw. Your left hand is usually not doing the correct things. Heeling is like playing golf. Lots of people try to use just one club, or one heel shot from one position. That’s the way they want to heel. However, that’s setting yourself up for failure and frustration. It’s very difficult to get into the correct position every time because of variables with your headers and steers. I believe you have to learn to heel all Breaking It Down with Speed Williams Why I Teach Heeling On The Speed Trainer I doubt there’s a more complex subject that’s been debated among the top ropers in the world than heeling. There are so many different opinions and approaches to heeling steers. Throughout my career I’ve had a lot of conversations with my partners, and other gold buckle heelers, and found there are many different See SPEED WILLIAMS On Page 13 Speed Trainer in action visit speedroping.com. APRIL 2024 ROPERS SPORTS NEWS PAGE 13 HIGHER CALL by Bob Ow ... and the greatest of these is love A month or so ago I was reflecting on the Christmas season that I had just enjoyed. The greatest gift for me was having my three kids come over and visit me on the coast. It was a wonderful time. It always is when they visit. My best present that Christmas was seeing and talking with my kids. They are all grown now (hardly kids, they are all in their 30s). I find that this experience is not rare, many I know feel the same way. When we read in the Bible that the greatest gift is love, it is easy to relate to when we are in the company of our kids, isn’t it? We want the best for our kids, as God wants the best for us. It is very easy to lose hope and be troubled in times like we are in. God’s love is easy to relate to when I think of my grown kids. He loves me the same way. That is why 1 Corinthians 13 puts a special emphasis on the importance of love: And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. I know it is the most fulfilling thing in my life and greatest motivation. Perhaps it is the same with you as well? Your father in Heaven loves you like this. That should be encouraging, especially in times that are a challenge. I remember well just before the birth of my first child that a friend of mine I worked with told me: “Bob, you will be astonished at how much you will love that baby.” Man, was he right on! The same thing happened with my next two children as well. Think of your children. That is how God loves you. I think that is vital for every Christian to realize this fact. Let it sink in, especially when adversity strikes. Start the season out great. Thank God for His many blessings in your life. Rope great. Have fun. Have faith. Frankly, I am just thankful to be alive. Brain surgery is a serious matter. God bless you all. Bob Ow lives in Ferndale, California on the northern coast. He and his wife Jo Anna, own a small 5 acre ranch and two really good rope horses. Bob underwent brain surgery in May of 2023 to remove a malignant tumor. Breaking It Down With Speed Williams... From Page 12 different angles and different deliveries and be able to pull off multiple shots. It’s common for heelers to watch someone do well and then go home and try to replicate that style. I’m guilty of this. I wanted to be able to rope every different way as a heeler. Short spoke, long spoke, big loop, little loop and all the different angles. I would study how people heeled and then try to figure out the advantages and disadvantages of that style. When I was young, I had the opportunity to run a lot of steers every day, so it was fun for me to try to mimic different styles. I enjoyed pulling off wild shots and learning what to do when I had to reach. That’s a huge benefit of using the Speed Trainer. You’re able to isolate various positions you encounter during a run and figure out the correct equation of where you need to put your rope on the ground from that position. I’m not saying that roping the dummy on the ground is bad for you. But for teaching my kids and clients, I want to have as close of a mathematical equation to the run as possible. I try to teach people how to use their left hand and their feet to control their horse to get a better shot. Your left hand is for guiding your horse and your right hand is for roping the feet. If you don’t understand the difference and how to use them independently, heeling can be very difficult. Why are there so many different teachings on heeling? Because if you have the correct angle with your swing, you can have different deliveries. Again, like a golfer, you need multiple clubs in your bag when you’re heeling and not rely on just one. The most common complaint I hear from people frustrated with their roping is, “This guy said this, but that guy said that.” They’ve all perfected their way of heeling and that’s the “golf club” they try to use from the position they try to rope from… and then adapt from there. There are many different angles, rope speeds, deliveries, and they’re all capable of making different variables work. You have to decide which style you want to try and make that the shot you’re looking for. You also have to be able to pull different clubs out of your bag when needed. It’s much simpler to teach someone to come around, let their horse rate off, lean forward and throw. The problem is it’s hard to ride different horses if you can’t control them. We all know the friend who had the horse that lasted 10 years before retiring. They can’t find a replacement that works for them because they can’t use their hands and feet. When you learn to use your hands and feet to control the horse, you’re able to ride a lot more horses. Heeling is a very complicated, but actually simple, procedure because you’re trying to put the rope on the ground behind the front legs, in front of the back legs, and there are so many different ways, ropes, and techniques to do it. I’m a firm believer in using ALL the golf clubs and that’s why I move the dummy around for my son. So he can figure out what he has to do with his body to catch.
