The second week of June rolled around as the CHSRA State Finals contestants rolled into Bishop, Calif. More than 250 contestants qualified for the 2013 State Finals Rodeo and it proved to have some of the toughest competition in recent years.
Attendance at the performances was up from the previous year and this year competitors enjoyed the largest joint corporate sponsorship every. Les Schwab, a long time sponsor, was joined by Cactus Saddlery, Cactus Gear, Cactus Ropes, Heel-O-Matic, Resistol, Platinim Performance, Hesston by Massey Ferguson, Ariat and Ropers Sports News.
All of these generous sponsors gave cash donations or product to make this one of the best Finals ever for California. Each go-round winner in the roping events received a Cactus rope. The fast time out of the first two go-rounds received a Platinum gift certificate. Some of the times were so quick that CHSRA staff members were checking the record books. In total CHSRA gave away nearly $50,000 in awards and scholarships.
By the end of the week the National team was chosen and the State Champions named. Many tough competitors went home empty handed but many will now go to Rock Springs, Wyo. to compete at the National High School Finals Rodeo. Billie Holman took home her second consecutive CHSRA All Around Cowgirl trailer and Clayton Brum of Dist. 3 was named All Around Cowboy.
As the National qualifiers and our new Miss CHSRA Kara Kester prepare for Wyoming, CHSRA prepares for another year. We would like to thank each one of our sponsors that helped this past year and our State Finals Rodeo to be outstanding. We would also like to wish all of our graduating seniors the best of luck in college and all of their future rodeo endeavors. CHSRA saw many long-time families for what seemed to be the last time in Bishop, but we hope to see them again with future generations.
