18th Annual Steve Maddalena Memorial
By Lacey Parsons
It’s hard to believe that my dad has been gone for so many years now. It has truly been a blessing to have ropers make the trek to Sierraville every year to celebrate his memory by doing what he loved most.
Steve Maddalena was larger than life. He loved to tell a good story, and if you were in a hurry, it was best to avoid him. He was a fan of Baxter Black poetry, raunchy stand-up comedians, and could read an entire book in less than a day. He was wickedly intelligent and was rarely off in his cow counts. He could show up at any cowboy outfit with rubber on his horn and earn commanding respect in the branding pen, because it didn’t matter how he dressed or how his saddle was rigged, he was a hand. People called his house phone regularly, knowing he wasn’t home, just so that they could listen to the recordings he left on his answering machine. He loved making people laugh, however, he could also be devilishly spiteful if you crossed him and would torment you with a smile on his face and joy in his heart. He was an insanely hard worker, and he could fix anything with electrical tape and baling wire. Steve Maddalena was special—and that’s exactly why this roping has successfully continued for nearly 20 years.
Thank you to the Sierra Valley Roping Club and the members who worked tirelessly to keep everything running smoothly. Thank you, Abby Mitchell, Barbara Widder, Mike Brewer, and all of the ropers and spectators. And, of course, a special thank you to my husband, Zack, and daughter, Stevie!
