‘Buckeye 10’ Is Largest WSTR Qualifier Ever!
Winners of the #12 WSTR Qualifier were Jack Reed and Scott Scarbrought.
Traditionally, the New Year’s qualifier is the big one, but this record-breaker came out of nowhere! Four divisions, and the payoff was $314,000, including that $22,800 that went to the winners of the #10, the largest qualifier ($150) in the history of the WSTR. We are being careful to signify the $150 version since the biggest check of the weekend was the $100,000 winner’s check at the Wildfire Open To The World in Salado, Texas. But the entry there was $1,500 per team, pick one draw one. The relevance of the entry fees did not miss the attention of the old dogs. So if you do the math on a $300 entry fee, you should find that the payoff was 76 times the entry fee, which is a record that certainly won’t be broken real soon by anyone in the roping industry.
Johnny Chambers and Justin Solomon were the winners. Johnny is a retired Napa Auto Parts dealer from Okema, Okla. Justin is from Athol, Idaho, and is an oil driller up in North Dakota. Two weeks on and two weeks off – what better way to recover from the cold than in Arizona.
Johnny got the biggest kick out of his wife. She didn’t come to Arizona with him this winter, and when he told her about the win on the phone, she just started hollering. Johnny said he didn’t know Justin prior to the roping, “Floyd Marshall said the young man roped good and encouraged me to rope with him. We roped a leg in the short round and were really surprised when they announced us as winners.” Johnny said this is his second biggest check in history as he hit a lick in the #9 at the 2009 USTRC Finals.
