WCRA 2011 Finals – #3.5 champions Bruce Lauritzen, left, and Flint Sweet, right. |
The opening of Fall signaled the closing of another successful year of the West Coast Roping Association. Once again ropers and their families found their way to S Bar J Arena in Sanger, Calif. After all the preparations had been completed the 2011 finals were off to a wonderful start. Lynette and Toni Wooten took charge of the office and ran it beautifully. It’s amazing how these ladies can do so many different jobs and always smile. Cathy Birch and Audra Fagundes answered the call to duty as announcers and did a wonderful job running nearly 2400 teams. Accepting the challenge of flagging were Lee Legasey and Bill Butler. Thanks to all of these wonderful people for helping this roping run so smoothly. Mike Owens was in charge of the environmental conditions and provided everyone a dust free week. Unfortunately he has informed us that he will not be able to accommodate us next year as he plans on being sick. A huge thanks goes out to Danny Schmidt for doing such a wonderful job as parking attendant and hall monitor.
With nearly $60,000 in prizes up for grabs, you would imagine the competition to be fierce. Looking back it brings a smile to my face when I think of a friend of mine, Steve Obau, that was going to win one of the trailers. He was the point leader by 200 points going into high teams of the last pot on the last day. We were standing next to each other as Trent Breckenridge came around the corner and roped a steer on his first hop. Heeling steers has never been Trent’s problem, but sometimes dallying has. After a few tense seconds and stretching ropes, Trent locked down on a leg and secured a spot in the money. When the points were awarded Trent had passed up Steve in the high point standings and won the trailer. The great part was that Steve was just as happy that Trent had won the trailer. It makes my job so rewarding when dealing with such great people. Congratulations to the Super #7 trailer winner, Jon Lauzon, as well as Trent, who won the #3.5 incentive trailer.
The awards this year were wonderful: trailers by Circle J and the Trailer Specialists, saddles by Running P Saddlery, and buckles by Bob Berg. We are very fortunate to deal with these professionals and their design staff. They did an exceptional job. A special thanks goes to Duck and Monica Burgess for coordinating all of the wonderful awards. I have many more stories about the great people and ropers of WCRA but not enough space to tell them. This is wishing everyone all the best and I hope to see you next season.
